i have a friend with a 97 accord with the f22 motor and wants to know what to adjust his new cam gear to when he puts it on, should he advance the timing or retard it?

Timing isn't anything to mess with. First of all, I would post this in the Honda forum. You need to find how many degrees the intake lobe is supposed to start opening before top center on #1 cylinder. Too late will cause rough idle and higher rpms, but may cause the engine to overheat. Too soon will lower RPMs, but increase low end torque. Too far either direction will cause some serious issues. It takes a dial indicator and some sort of angle measuring device to do so (like a cam degreeing kit). For stock, there is usually a procedure for timing the cam. I would follow this if not using an aftermarket cam.

Re: cam gears

UUM,
You are probably referring to changing the timing belt on the Honda 2.2 engine. Is not a job for amateurs, takes a bit of time. Complete instructions can be obtained out of a Chilton manual on the car, get one at an auto parts store.
