SRS Airbag Light on

I don't know what i did to my 97 Civic coupe, but the SRS light at the bottom of the tach stays on all the time now. It used to come on intermittently and when i shut the car off and restarted it, the light would be gone...but now the light is a permanent resident in the guage cluster. How do i get rid of it? How did it appear in the first place so it doesn't happen again?

Re: SRS Airbag Light on

I plan on running a diagnostics tuner on my car and pull the code, but i was wondering more what would have caused it to happen in the first place. I don't want to fix it and then have it happen again.

Re: SRS Airbag Light on

it could be many things from low voltage to a set belt buckle to an actually bad deployment unit in an airbag. Kinda hard to tell without the code though.

Re: SRS Airbag Light on

I disconnected the battery for a while and before that i had a really crappy battery for like a week...could that have done it? I have to wait until Monday the 24th to pull the code so i'm trying to figure out what may have caused it.

1997 Honda Civic DX SRS light

The SRS light in my 1997 Honda Civic DX Hatchback came on due to a low battery. If you turn the ignition switch when there is low power the SRS control module will record a low voltage error code. The SRS light on the dash will come on to indicate a code stored in the control module. The light can be cleared by following the procedure found here.

http://honda.hybrids.jp/forum/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=faqbody&Number=54125&p age=0&view=expanded&sb=5&o=2

I will try to upload an image of the procedure page to my image gallery.

You can reset the memory with a low tech alternative to an MES connector such as a paper clip.

If you are not the DIY type a Honda dealer can check your SRS control module, find out what the error code indicates, and if it was a simple low voltage error, reset the light for you. This should cost a one hour labor charge. ($50-75) It is unlikely you need a new module ($450). If the error code indicates some other fault in the airbag system additional repairs may be required. If you have modified your seat, steering wheel, gauges, etc. the issue will be more complicated.

im having the same problem (SRS light) and i went to a few diff websites explaining how to get it off and i learned all about the MES connector, so i go out to my car (97 civic HX) and found what i think is it. it was a little different then the one in the sites i went to soo just playing it safe i take it to the dealership where the guy tells me "you cant reset it yourself you need to have us hook something up and clear it for you". i dont remember exactly what he said it was, but apparently it costs $88 to do it... ridiculous. I already have the panel off, everything is exposed for them. how hard would it be to plug something in and push some buttons, assuming thats what they would be doing. anyways i was just wondering if this guy is BS'ing me or not about doing it myself

Re: SRS Airbag Light on

As i said before there might be some other error code in the SRS ECU, the honda guy wants to know what the code is so he doesnt send you out on the road with disabled airbags to a fiery crash and have your estate sue his ass off. Honda reccomends a certified tech with the right tools do it. One hour labor was quoted to me at several dealers. $88 an hour seems kinda steep. I did it myself, if followed the instructions you can find in my image gallery. It worked perfect, and the light is out. Paper clip cost = free cuz I took it from work.
