Urgent! Dirty Metro Transmissions (literally)
Hello all,
So here's the deal (I have to make this kinda short cause I have carpal tunnel syndrome that seems to really hurt when I type) I just dropped the clutch out my 95 metro (5-speed, three cylli) to replace it. After returning from the machine shop, where I dropped off my fly wheel, I inspected my clutch chamber. It was just doused in tranny fluid! I could tell by the smell that the only thing leaking was the tranny fluid, no engine oil. My clutch is just saturated with tranny fluid and I'm pretty sure that is why it's slipping. I was getting ready to call the parts shop to buy a seal for my ahhh (the crank that goes from the transmission to the clutch) when I realized I'd have to freaking disassemble the tranny to replace that particular seal! I took it too a tranny specialist, but he does mainly auto trannies, so he didn't know what to expect inside (therefore I left, not wanting to pay so much for service cost).
My metro is still sitting in a friend's mechanic shop taking his space, which he needs by tommorrow morning. I guess my questions are:
1. Would I be ok if me (beginning mechanic) and my friend (mechanic for over 30 years) were too take apart the tranny and put in the seal ourselves? Are springs going to fly every which way, leaving us totally helpless?
2. What's a dependable site online where I can get a rebuilt, used, or new tranny for the cheapest?
3. Will there be much difference in price if I bring my tranny already disassembled vs. 'as is' to a specialist to do it?
a. what can I expect to pay for such services, from a tranny specialist?
