Hard shifting in 95 GP

after my 95 GP warms up to normal running temps, it will start to shift hard. its not like a little bump but a hard jerk. i dont know how to fix it. my dad said that "hard shifts are good" and by adding the Lucas Transmission treatment it will "wear the metal in the transmission faster" i think hes wrong. is hard shifting normal like my dad says or something that should be fixed?

Re: Hard shifting in 95 GP

Hard shifting can be good i think if the transmission is made for it, but if u have the stock transmission on there, like mine ( i also have a 95 grand prix gtp) and for a while my transmission was shifting real hard, so i did a fresh fluid and filter change and it shifts very smooth now.

Re: Hard shifting in 95 GP

so you think if i put new fluid in it, it would help it shift smoother?

Re: Hard shifting in 95 GP

Yea, if u have access to a lift its really easy, but u could just do it with a jack. it is a pain to drain the transmission fluid b/c there isnt a drain plug or bolt so u have to loosen like 6 bolts and let it drain out of one end. Go to any local auto parts store like autozone and they'll prolly have a filter in stock and it took a LOT of transmission fluid to put back in when i did it. the guy gave me 6 i think and said the was plenty, but i had to go get 2 more quarts to fill it. Autozone will probably have like 3 different filters that u have to pick from, there should be a number on the bottom of your transmission pan that will specify which one you need. Mine is 4T65E and the filter for it was only 12.99 .

Re: Hard shifting in 95 GP

I dont think autozone does that, but im sure any auto repair shop would do it, ...it shouldn't cost too much for labor i wouldnt think, because it's really simple, and there isnt anything in the way of it that has to be takin off or moved.

Re: Hard shifting in 95 GP

ok. how much do you think it would cost to fix? and is it true that useing the Lucas Treatment would wear down my transmission faster?

i was drivin today and i found that if i take my foot off the gas right before it shifts, and then give it gas after it shifts, it wont jerk at all.

Re: Hard shifting in 95 GP

Im not sure how much it would cost, i've always done all my fixes my self, but any auto shop should be able to give you an estimate. i wouldnt think it would be much. And i have heard the same about the Lucas Treatment, i dont know from experience, but i'd rather not find out, i just take their word for it, lol. Also about how u let ur foot off and get back on it, i was able to do the same thing, im almost positive the transmission fluid and filter change will fix ur problem.

Re: Hard shifting in 95 GP

I dont think the foot thing would hurt anything, but just dont floor it when it is shifting real hard like that, lol. and be real easy on it till u get it fixed.

Re: Hard shifting in 95 GP

my 95gp was experiencing the same problem. i did a filter and fluid as well. and then i got that 100% fluid replacement, (torque converter, cooler, lines, etc) and got it filled with that full synthetic stuff. i dont feel a thing anymore.
