i have recently traded vehicles and recieved a 91' toyota 4runner v6 4x4 with all the bells and whistles. 2nd day i had it went romping in some mud with a buddy. that night went to go wash the truck and used engine cleaner. when i got home i had ordered an aftermarket intake for a 96' toyota seeing as there shouldnt be a difference when all the hoses and whatnot would be taken care of. after installing all the parts (with the help of my friend) i tried to turn on the truck. it cranked and cranked but did not start. my buddy told me to put the stock intake back on and we would mess with it the next day. put the stock stuff back on and it did the same exact thing. and from here, its been hell. my buddy and i have worked on cars and he had even set up his own truck with modifacations and the sort when he was younger. so i had confidance in his abilities. i really dont want to make the story long so ill just -mark from here...
1) there is no spark. we used a 12v test light on the ignition coil and other *ignition* related areas, but came to conclusion of no spark. 2) so far ive replaced a coil pack, coil ignitor, distributor with new cap, spark plug wires. about 400$ worth so far. 3) tonight we just did the distributor. and still all crank no start. now i dont know if it was the romping that might have messed something up. or the washing. or even the installation of the after market intake. but we are stumped. noticing cords and what not that dont have power leading to the top of the distributor. dont know if thats important. i noticed several other (near year 4runners) with similar problems but my buddy says they are unrelated to ours. ive been going crazy as this has been a week now with no improvment, and i dont have the money to take it to a dealer. and i found this forum after searching for online help. i would really appreciate any insight. thanx -mike |

Re: please help!!!
Check very closely, even continuity checks of wiring, around where you did the first work with the after market intake. For example if that MAF vane doesn't move when you turn over the engine the fuel pump has problems. check the areas of the work.

Re: please help!!!
I'm not sure I understand... no spark, where exactly?
I'm thinking you don't have a coil pack... : ) but you replaced the ignition coil. There's any easy test to see if that's working properly, before spending the money on it. If you weren't getting spark at the ignition coil, don't spend your hard earned money on the other stuff... keep your receipts, and be prepared to take those plug wires back (they are probably 5mm wires for $60 - $70 anyway : ) there are tons of sites for testing the coil... here's an ok one: http://autorepair.about.com/cs/troub.../aa062902a.htm If you find that the coil is really not getting spark, start tracing back for power... this can be tedious. Most often it's a ground wire that's not touching somewhere, or a fuse. |

Re: Re: please help!!!
im sure its something stupid like a ground wire or a fuse, i have a 12 volt tester and have tested almost all of the "power" areas containing the coil and coil ignitor, we finally got power from those. traced things back to the distributor and now the wires leading from the distributor are not getting any power. also the rotor on top isnt spinning. (distributor rotor, which was replaced along with the whole shaft, and top) sighz. im gonna check the wires one more time tonight and hope to god i find something. ive been working on this thing for 4 - 5 days now trying to get it to work. thnx for ur help -mike

I suggest the above because it sounds like this (not rotating) happened when you replaced the shaft, new one may be wrong one. So, if the distributer rotor did not turn then as you crank the motor over watch for rotation of the rotor, no rotation when engine is turning over means a drive train problem! Broken timing belt. Good luck |
