I really want some exhaust to put on my 97 4runner sr5 4x4. But i have no idea which exhaust would sound the best. The best meaning really deep and throaty. If you could give me a few ideas or some websites to visit, please do.

Re: exaust
You want something loud and obnoxious garranteed to get you lots of dirty looks then by all means go with a glasspack set up...
You got lots of money and want something that sounds as cool as the recognized name and something you have to screw with all the time(replacing header and collector gasgets...retightening headers and collectors bi-weekly) and don't mind for performance gains then go with a complete header and exhaust system...800-1000 bucks You can step that down to a Cat back* system that just is what it says...a system that replaces everything from Cat.(converter) on back...prolly 500 bucks. You go with above choices and have to drive long trips...the noise on highway will be quite(not quiet) annoying not to mention expensive... Step it down to installing a Flow Master 2 baffle free'er flowing muffler or a cheaper knock off type with tail pipe replaced with same size as front pipe (od) and it will give added performance,a slight to moderate rumble and still be quiet when cruising or at idle(just a tad above stock sound levels )When you floor it you will notice it pulls off the line better...takes grades better and sounds sweet. If you go with a *turbo* design 2 baffle generic muffler and replace pipe from muffler back it will run you about 125-135.00...you want the flow master name and it will cost you another 70+ bucks and believe me they are not all that great as compared to many others in their range......stainless is nice and will outlast the vehicle as well as ownership most times..big deal, how long you going to own it or nurse it in old age?Mail me a 100 bucks for replying if rich what the hell (j/k but if you really love tossing money away..go for it lol) It is not a hotrod so why try to empress others trying to make it sound like something it's not only to annoy them and have them laugh at you saying look at that idiot hotrodder wannabe..... I installed the 2 baffle generic turbo muffler and the pipe to rear on my gutless gas guzzling sweet driving 92 4x4 3.0L V6 model and now it takes hills in over drive that I had to downshift to clear before and sounds great with just a hint of performance sound and has not wound up neighbors because my rides obnoxiously loud and wakes them up mornings and nights when I leave or come home (think past yourself too lol ) P.S.If sound is a major issue then you might take money you save trying it the way I suggest and invest it into a good sound system(just an idea ).....goodluck |

Re: exaust
Yes I am that site as I have done it first hand....the stock muffler has a 2 1/4 " inlet and a 2" outlet. All that needs to be done at local muffler shop is to cut and toss old exhaust system from muffler back (cut pipe at back of muffler and weld new muffler with 2 1/4" inlet and outlet to old pipe and replace tail pipe from muffler all the way back with new 2 1/4" pipe)The minus to this is....when you step on it...it runs alot better but will burn up the gas quicker as it can now move more exhaust faster, thereby drawing in more fuel. But you will notice you can climb steeper grades without downshifting and if you stay off the throttle and drive normal as on highway...fuel consumption is about the same...goodluck

Re: exaust
I have a 97 4Runner with a Magnaflow exhaust. In my opinion the Magnaflow exhaust systems best suit imports. The Magnaflow mufflers have no baffles so no restriction. Just remember the shorter the muffler the louder and vise versa. I have a 14 inch stainless muffler on my Runner and it sounds like i have a V8 under ther hood!! and I got my muffler for $120 cdn!! Good luck

Re: exaust
Do not waste your money on a cat back system. I spent over $500 on a Borla stainless cat back system, I was not impressed. My friends and family have had excellent results with DynoMax Super Turbo. It will run around $85 installed or maybe a little more if you decide to beef up the size of the exhuast pipe, still a fraction of what I spent. Don't believe the hype! I belive DynoMax is the best bang for your buck.

Re: exaust
I replaced my exhaust last week...had the cat removed, a cheap turbo muffler, and 2 1/4 pipe out the back. It runs a lot better, dropped some rpm on the highway so mileage is better, but it sounds like a damn trackter at idle, low rpms don't sound good either...but it sounds cool when you open it up. I am going to have the muffler replaced again to hopefully improve the sound and quiet the volume a bit. It an 88 w/ a 3.0 and an auto tranny
