Re: Trans Whines And Is Slow To Shift While Truck Is Cold.
It is because it is cold. Let it warm up first.
All auto tranny's are slow to shift when their warm!! Same thing happens with lockers and anything else that has to get warm first. Let your truck get nice and warm before you go driving it. |

Re: Trans Whines And Is Slow To Shift While Truck Is Cold.
I Found The Fluid Was Low When The Whine Developed. Should I Consider Changing The Fluid? I Read In Some Other Postings That Their Noise "was Not A Belt Problem". Could My Problem Be A Belt Inside The Trans Problem? If So, Can Belts (in Trans) Be Adjusted?

Re: Trans Whines And Is Slow To Shift While Truck Is Cold.
Well the fluid is probally going down and the trans whining due to the fact that it is not warmed up, my 93 shifts like shit when cold.

A tranny that whines is usually from the front pump but that does not mean that the pump is bad.

Re: Trans Whines And Is Slow To Shift While Truck Is Cold.
First thing to do is change the filter and fluid. That will solve a LOT of tranny issues.

Re: Trans Whines And Is Slow To Shift While Truck Is Cold.
I'm on the way to the store to get fluid, fiter and gasket today. I talked with a local trans shop and they recommened the same thing. They said I should look for metal or other particles in the pan. If a lot of stuff is in the pan, it probably means the trans is on it's way out. I'm hoping for the clogged filter and no mteal shavings senerio....
Thanks for the input. |

Re: Trans Whines And Is Slow To Shift While Truck Is Cold.
I've owned two gas stations and been working on cars for 30 years and changed plenty of auto trans fluid/filters. You will ALWAYS find some particles on the bottom of the pan. You may even find quite a bit of material there. It's normal and I would not be concerned unless the pieces are quite large.

I guess my comment about the pieces being "quite large" could be kinda funny. I mean, if it's pieces of gears and such, well then, yeah, you gotta serious problem.
Funny thing is, I've done plenty of trannies where the pieces really have been large, some of them on my own, lol. |

Re: Trans Whines And Is Slow To Shift While Truck Is Cold.
When I pulled the pan on a friends car, I think there was enough metal shavings to fill 20 of those "Wooly Willy" game things... tranny has been fine, going on a year now.

Re: Trans Whines And Is Slow To Shift While Truck Is Cold.
Well, I Changed The Fluid And Filter. It Made A Big Improvement In The Way The Trans Sounds. No More Whine, And It Shifts Better As Well.
In The Pan, Was About 1/4" Of Fine [maybe Even Metalic] Sludge. I Wiped It Clean And Put It All Back Together. We'll See What Happens Next... |

Re: Trans Whines And Is Slow To Shift While Truck Is Cold.
Lots of metallic particles is normal. The clutch packs and bands in the transmission are made out a material similar to a brake pad. As such, they wear down. For instance, you typically see brake dust on your wheels (unless you have the expensive pads) as the brake pads wear down. The same thing happens in the tranny except the worn material cannot escape the transmission case, so it settles to the bottom of the pan and eventually clogs up the filter.

Re: Trans Whines And Is Slow To Shift While Truck Is Cold.
Thanks. I Was A Little Worried That This Better Operation Would Be Very Short Lived. Someone Told Me That If There Was A Lot Of Metal In The Bottom Of The Pan That The Trans Might Work Better, But For Only A Short Period Of Time. I Know It Won't Last Forever With The Bands And What-not Loosing Their Materials, But Hopefully It Will Last For A Couple Thousand More Miles. I'm Glad I Found This Web Page With The Good Feed-back I Have Received. Thanks Everybody.
