Fiberglass Enclosure question

okay, i want to make some fiberglass englosures badly (kick panels, subwoofer box) and im a little confused. In a fiberglass enclosure does the box volume matter? All of the pictures i have seen (or articles i have read) havent addressed this problem and im a little lost. With regular MDF boxes the volume is very important.......... does this apply to fiberglass? as well, i really enjoy the sound of a ported box for my 2 12" RE subs, and i was wondering if there is a way to get the same sound/feel from a fiberglass enclosure (i have only seen sealed). Thank you much for any help.

Well, you can check out www.caraudio.com or www.soundillusions.net for even more help... but...

Two easier ways to measure fiberglass exact volume are using either packing peanuts or water. Before you build you should try to get a rough estimate of what you think the volume is. Then with either of the above methods...fill the enclosure with them. Then search online or google for the conversion factor to cubic feet (sorry i don't know it off the top of my head ) Don't worry, the water won't hurt the fiberglass box

Iono if this is right, but this is wut ive been told....

Use as much wood(mdf) as you can on the box. Try to make only the top of the enclosure made from fiberglass. This will make it easier to make, and easier to get the volume. If you are going a custom mold enclosure, you obviously have an obsitcal ahead of you, and like NG said you can measeure with packing peanuts or water. Its obviously you cant really use mdf on the kickpanels, so those will have to be custom molded all of fiberglas. Good Luck.

How do you get the initial shape of the kick panels? Do you model it with wire mesh or something? Fiberglass is increadibly messy in my experience, so I'd think that you can't just do right into your car, or you'll end up with resin all over the place. Are there tutorials for doing it for car audio applications around?
