surging/cruise shutting off

I have a 2000 Alero 2.4L. when Im cruising at highway speed the engine surges. The RPMs surge up 500-1000 RPMS. When the cruise is set the surging will cause it to shut off. sometimes you can drive for 10 or more miles with out it shutting off and sometimes it does it every 1/2-1 mile. dealer said they couldnt find anything. any advise?

Mike-- I am having similar problem, but surges in 1st or 2nd gear usually. Fuel injector system is going to be a good start. I have eliminated the coils and fuel filter and believe your problem will be with a bad fuel injector. Unknow which one out of the four, but have garage hook up to computer, to find out. Cleaning/flushing the fuel injector system did not work for me. Good luck Phil

I have 2002 Alero - That happend to me, early this year. I ended up fixing my fuel injector and fuel pump, also, they found out coolant was leaking into transmission area. However, after fixed it, my cruise control and my fuel light went off. Found out later that, there's couple censors went off around engine area. That causes RPM to rise and disable the cruise and engine to heat up quick, so engine surges and jerks.

You might want to check the censors, they are very tricky sometimes. One more, keep your eye on gauges, to see, if your engine surges when engine over heats.

good luck
