1999 tahoe Clicking sound.

When i start my tahoe, I have a clicking noise that seems to run even with the reving of the engine. It goes away after I am driving a few minutes. Thanks for any ideas.

I have the same thing on my 96. It only clicks on the first start of the day. During the last couple years it seemed to only happen during the winter. This spring it doesn't seem to be going away. I wasn't real worried as I have 129000 mile on it and things are starting to wear. But if anyone can diagnose the noise it would be great.

I would guess that it is piston slap, most GM aluminum blocks that are steel sleeved do this, especially when cold the disimilar metals expand and contract differently when cold to hot.

Re: 1999 tahoe Clicking sound.

The '99 and earlier Tahoes didn't have aluminum engines so that wouldn't be their problem. I have the old iron block 350 in my '99.
It sounds like it may be a lifter problem but I would have to hear it to be sure.

I had a similiar problem and then noticed that I was losing coolant. It turned out that I had a leak iat the intake gasket. I asked the mechanic at the local Chevy dealership if the clicking noise had anything to do with it and he said it COULD be from some of the liquid that got into the engine. Since, I have had the repair work and the oil changed (at the same time of cours) I have not heard any more clicking sounds. Don't know if it will help or not, but check under your oil cap and see if you have any "white globs"...that might indicate some water. Just trying to help.

thanks a lot, I do have a coolant leak at the intake mantifold. I was not looking forward to dealing with it but if it does solve two problems it would be better. was your clicking related to temperature?

was the intake repair expensive? I know I could do the gasket myself but I don't have time right now. is it worth going to get it done?

Re: 1999 tahoe Clicking sound.

If your time is valuable then you should have it done but it's not too difficult to DIY if you have a good set of tools and a reasonable amount of mechanical experience. I think it could easily be done on a weekend afternoon.

Hey guys , I am also having some sort of ticking sound from my 99' 5.7 litre tahoe. Every time I pass a building it sounds lawn mowerish I guess. I haven't had any radiator or intake leaks and my temperature stays about 180F. I can drive all day and all night and the temp never changes but the sound is always there , Ticking in my head driving me insane! I was wondering if the 99' tahoes where eqipped with the "butterfly" valve in the exhaust or not and if so or not , would this be the possible cause ? I have 52000 miles on mine. 4 door , 4x4.

Any help would be great , It's making me crazy!!! @_@

Re: 1999 tahoe Clicking sound.

may be a valve. Mine started ticking today after I passed a semi truck. I'm going to check on it tomarrow. I'm almost sure it's a valve gone out of wack.
