Radio Swap-AM to AM/FM stereo cassette
I've just received a factory AM/FM radio and cassette from a 1994 GMC truck. Mine is a 1993 Chevy Cheyenne with the AM factory radio. Problem is, I didn't realize that you must plug it into the Tuner(CDM). This is a separate piece above the gas pedal. My question is this, before I go hunting for it...Will the tuner for my AM radio work with this factory AM/FM? Do I have to get a tuner to match? I've already noticed that the stereo radio has a fixed wire with plug on the end, cassette does also, whereas the AM radio has a plug going into it. I'm pretty sure that the radios from '88-94 are interchangeable.

What's this tuner your talking about?? The radio has a "tuner" built into it. Anyways, I would say if the factory harness (cab side) will plug into the radio or radios harness, you should be good to go. Otherwise, guess you would have to splice (doubt it) and since the radio you want to install is a factory (OEM) also, the color codes for the wires should be the same for the most part. But there could be some different.

Oddly enough, these truck radios including AM/FM receivers do have a separate tuner. There is a guy on ebay selling NOS ones and they fetch anywhere from $60-$100, which is much less than the price you would pay for a new one from the dealer. This site is taken from a previous thread on here, and it shows the tuner. Excellent site btw, http://www.carstereohelp.com/. I'm hoping not to have to cut and splice or otherwise change anything with the wiring. This started off to be just a quick, cheap conversion as listening to all oldies, or all news radio was getting to me. Hell, I'd even go for one of the "C-Quam" AM stereo radios they sold back then!

you may be better off to buy an aftermarket cd/cassete player, you can buy a wiring harness for about 5 bucs that will plug right into the stock wiring. That's what I did.
