oxygen sensor

If my ecu shows that i have a problem with my oxygen sensor how do i check it and would that cause my idle to drop and rise

Is a bad o2 sensor a big deal or should i just ignore it?

do you mean check the sensor or the ecu? If you need to check the ecu flip up the carpet and see if it blinks one quick blink, that's code 1 oxygen content. If that's not what you mean ignore what i just said..lol.

For checking the sensor I think you can take it into a dealer or mechanic and there's some machine to check if it's working properly- but I never did that.

I could tell when mine was bad because my car was running pig rich and getting terrible mpg ..also I could smell a strong gas odor in the car and would even get alittle black smoke sometimes from the exhaust. Do you have any of those symptoms?

I have already checked the ecu and it blinked twice i was told that it was the o2 sensor. My car does have a strong gas smell from time to time.
