Re: ECU and VTECH control Myth
Whatever. You guys can make fun of it all you want, but i didn't install it and i don't plan to change it either. I have beaten other Civics w/ almost the same set up as mine...the only diff was the chip.

Re: Re: Re: ECU and VTECH control Myth
Ok, i'm not trying to be a dick or anything here, nor am I trying to make fun of you; but from a technical standpoint, vtec engagement at anything lower than the factory setting does not give you any gains, unless you have an aftermarket cam designed to take advantage of vtec engagement at that given rpm. Honda set vtec at the point they did for a reason, changing it without proper mods to pair it with will not give you any gains, and may even slow you down. This has been tested many times.
Also, its impossible that it would make you go faster off the line since the vtec cam profile wasn't designed to make lower end power. In fact, early activation makes you bog and even lose power. Even if your vtec engagement was set at an optimal point, whatever rpm that may be, I doubt it would make a difference in power since only the intake valves are affected, and I doubt sohc vtec lobes are very aggressively profiled at all. The reason you are able to maintain you gas effiency is because you are only sohc, so only the intake valves are affected. imho, you beating other Civics can be attributed to driver skill, not your chip. EDIT: And how are you even sure your vtec engages at 2500rpm (besides the other guy's word). Most sohc vtec owners I know say that their vtec engagement isn't even audible, nor could they even physically feel it kick in. Do you have an indicator light wired up? and don't say you can feel it kick in because all you really should be feeling with it engaging that low is the bogging.

Re: ECU and VTECH control Myth
I don't know what is all done to the engine. I didn't do anything to it internally, but the guy i bought it from had worked on it and told me that VTEC engages lower than a normal Civic and when we drove it, he pointed out when it engaged and told me what i told you guys above. When you hit 2500rpm, the car surges forward and makes a little whistling noise because it pulls more air past the butterfly valve in the throttle body.
It is hard to explain, but if you drove it, you'd know something is different. I have dirven my friend's 98 Ex coupe w/ the same mods as my car externally (except for the header) and his car is obviously slower than mine. I don't know what to tell you guys, but i was told this and i went with it. I haven't torn into the engine, but i'm sure that something else must be done to it internally. Anyway, i didn't know that lowering the VTEC rpm slowed the car down so thanks for that bit of info. Thanks guys! What do you think is done to my car then? You can really notice a change at 2500rpm when you go from half throttle to full throttle. You can ride the rpms up slowly until 5000 and then there is a little more kick, but if you step it down over 2500, then you feel a big kick too. He said that was the VTEC that he had reset, but honestly i'm just telling you what he said, whether he was lying or not is a different story.

Re: ECU and VTECH control Myth
yeah its true...the vtec controller changes your vtec engagement points..but if you want more boost out of your gsr get a bigger cam. Dont go changing your vtec points low otherwise you wont get nuttin out of it. It's been a while since I drove a gsr so i dont remember when the vtec engages. Brother of mine had one and he was always fuckin' wit me know his car was faster than mine, but if i would of done more modification i would of smoked him regardless if he had a vtec controller or not
