Re: Overdrive misbehaviour ('94 GC Laredo 5.2V8)

dksob81... About the Thermostat issue....
The Temp doesn't get that hot when the OD starts shifting.
The temp is in normal operation level.
Asked the mechanic about checking the thermostat and told me that they have done that already and also told me that the Thermostat should not be the problem because the motor is not that hot when the problem ocurrs.
It sounds fair, but I just want to be sure. What do you think?.

Speed sensor

I have been trying to research this problem and it has lead me to believe one of two speed sensors may be at fault. My only problem is how to check a sensor? Anyone have any experience.

HSawabe - That does make sense. If the engine isn't getting hot then that wouldn't cause the Tranny Fluid to overheat. It still sounds like the tranny is overheating, have they checked the OD Switch.

OD Switch was the very first thing checked and also tested changing it temporarily for another one (used) and the problem persisted.
I have called to the shop and I will take it there again tomorrow morning.
Now they are desperate too... :S

I have a 1994 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 litre 110,000 miles. A few weeks ago while driving on I-26 the tranny shifted out of overdrive and would not go back into overdrive. I made a rest stop and when I restarted the engine the tranny was back in OD. Ten miles down the road at 75 mph the transmission basically disentigrated. Nothing internally was salvageable. The dealer said the output shaft locked up. The lockup lasted about 1/2 second and felt like someone ran into the back of the vehicle. Bottom line........factory rebuilt tranny $ 3,000.

There was absolutely no prior warning previous to the tranny shifting out of OD. Good Luck.
