A tool/toy to improve everything running wise 96+ Geo's
www.scanguage.com
This thing is great. Take a look. It tells a great deal about these little cars. Works on any car 96 and newer. Hooks to the OBDII Port under the dash. The real time trip computer is great, but the codes is a close second. |

Great find! SWEET price for a scan tool. Dealer scan tools run over $300+$100 for the software package for your car. But, it will only read. There's cables out there that hook your OBDII car into the serial port of a laptop, and software to read the output. Plus, with the laptop, you can re-program spark timing, fuel curves, and any other input/output in the ECU. But, those are illegal because of emissions laws.

I looked at a bunch for pocket pc and laptops. None that I found really had what I wanted. MPG in real time kicked me from 38mpg to almost 49mpg. I have a huge commute so driving changes over the 60 miles was huge plus it is the same every day. Alot of the tuner class systems out there measure 0-60, 1/4 mile, 1/8 mile seemed like a joke to measure on my car.
Fyi, 1 buddy of mine engine was on his maxima we read the code, o2 sensor was bad, and another guy has a dakota pickup heat wasnt working used it to measure the coolant temp. Confirmed thermostat was bad. Saved 2 trips to the dealer or shop. Each fix took less than 1 hr. The unit cleared the codes and the lights. Paid for itself the first week. The 4 displays of data at once is great too. |

Ohh yea it will pay for itself. Scan tools are priceless if you have one. You can diagnose sooo many problems that will otherwise puzzle any mechanic without one. If I had an OBD-II car, i would have already ordered one of those when ya pointed it out

Some GM vechicles in 95 were dunno if a Geo was one or not. Look under the dash on the drivers side for the port. most obdii scanner companies have list of what is compatible with their scanners.

Got mine. Works fine on my '96 1.0 3-cyl.
No codes to check, so I can't report on that. The MPG numbers really reinforce the idea behind hybrids: that acceleration from a dead stop yields horrendous efficiency (which is why hybrids use their electric motor for this), but cruising is what small gas engines are efficient at. The trip computer has nice features. |

Very true. Getting the car up to speed uses more gas than anything. My lincoln in rush hour traffic gets about 7mpg. But, at a smooth 65mph, it'll get about 30. Stop and go will make almost any car get horrid gas mileage. But with a tiny engine like a geo, you'll still get in the 25-35mpg range in traffic.
