2000 Malibu Theft Lock ? again

I have a 2000 Malibu with the following problem. My theft system light came on the other day and I waited for the 10 minutes with the key on then turned it off and the car started. The theft light stayed on but the car ran o.k. for 2 days even with the light on. Today I tried to start it with the remote starter ( autostart) and I walked outside and heard the engine turning over but it didn't start. The remote shut down so I decided to try to start it with the key that was in the ignition. The car wouldn't start. I turned it to the on position and waited 10 minutes or longer but saw the theft light was solid not blinking. I've read the post and other have had a problem like this except my system light stays on. I also tried to start it with the remote which should have bypassed the sensor in the ignition. Again my theft light stays on and won't shut off. Does anyone know if the light stays on if this is a code for bad fuel pump or something. Any help thanks in advance.

the light flashes if it is a theft problem, until it resets.
as for the fuel pump do you here it run and shut off when you turn the key on?

I'm not sure if the pump is running yet. I have to get it in the garage at home to listen to it. If the pump is o.k. do you have an idea what it could be.

Re: 2000 Malibu Theft Lock ? again

that happen to me a couple of years ago my theft light would come on and off as it pleased. Every once in a while it would trip and I would have to wait 10 minutes for it to reset. then my fuel pump went out and was replaced under warr. but the theft still acted up once in a while but it has not done it in a long time. I thinkd mine was related to moisture always seem to do it when it was raining.
I would be more concerned about the fuel pump fuse blowing, did you buy a spare and put in the car?
When my pump went bad you could kick the fuel tank and make it run, it never blew the fuse though.

The theft systems uses the fuel pump to disable the car from starting. Mine would fire for a second and then quit and the theft light would flash afterwards.

There not to bad to change you have to drop the tank, if it is close to empty you can balance it on a floor jack with a board. I've done a full one that way and I didnt get wet. Put a screwdriver handle in the filler hose and tighten the clamp. There is a check valve at the tank but I wouldnt trust it.

You didnt say if it is a v6 or a 4 banger but the v6 has a fuel psi test point on the pass. side of the back bank you can put a gauge on it and test the pump v6 41-47 psi and the four banger req's a adapter hose to test never done one of those. but the psi 41-57 depends on year and how equiped.

Re: 2000 Malibu Theft Lock ? again

I have the 6 cly. My theft light isn't flashing it is on all the time. I was wondering if that is indication of a bad pump or some other code. I'm going to buy 2 fuel relays incase it happens again. Just wish I could get the light to go off.

i know with the engine light it stays on until it goes through several cycles without sensing the fault then it will go out. The theft may work in the same manner, that I dont know.

I'll put money on what you did isn't the answer. You have a PasskeyII system failure. There is an extremely high rate of failures with these systems on ALL Gm vehicles. GM has no idea really what the problem is. I would suggest having the shop that put in the remote starter to double check everything. I know my old bypasses(I own a remote starter shop) that I would have problems later on. They were the old 555t from DEI. They now have 555L that work much better.

Well it's been about a week or so and the light is still on. So it doesn't appear it will reset it self. Do you think if I turn the manual remote switch to off this would reset it.????

Not sure if this will help, but thought I'd try. The last-gen Malibu has the PassLock System (not PassKeyII; my '04 Maxx has PassKeyIII+), which has been a nightmare. Two of my friends ditched their '97 and '98 Malibus over this issue, but I persisted hanging on to my '98 LS for 6 years, thanks to GMPP (extended warranty). I replaced the ignition lock cylinder 6 times, and when it went for the 7th time, I too, threw in the towel. If it hadn't been for GMPP (no cost to me & free rentals), I'd be in a Camcord by now....

Just before I traded, I grew accostomed to waiting the 15 mins for the Theft System to reset, being cussed at in gas station lines, car wash lines, etc.

I thought they had fixed this by the '00 model year, but guess not.

I don't think it's fixable.

Sorry.

Re: 2000 Malibu Theft Lock ? again

my sister had an aftermarket alarm audiovox installed by a professional. and The car would autostart and then die right away also. He came back several times to fix it. He had to bypass the something in order for the theft light to stop flashing or staying on. Car works good as new.

Yep, bad install on the bypass unit used to bypass the PK2 system.

Re: Re: Re: 2000 Malibu Theft Lock ? again

I have never had this problem, but have owned other GM cars (never again). I have found that simply dis-connecting the battery for about 1/2 hour or so, usually re-sets these computers. Could be wrong, but I'm sure it won't hurt anything.
Give it a try, what the heck, right?
