LOTS of STUPID question

Hey there. I got my Bronco about a year ago and I have lots of questions. For instance, my sticker says my engine is a 351m/400. So, how do I tell which it is or are they the same? And WHERE can I get a 4 barrell carb and a hi-rise manifold? How can I tell if the underbody has the right size parts for the size of the motor? I am an idiot....

Let's start you off with the basics, k?

There are three kinds of "351"s...

351C- Cleveland. Hi-performance used in late sixties, (maybe early 70's). A motor unto itself. It's unlike anything else.

351W- Windsor. Basically a big version of the 302. The building blocks of a "Boss" motor. These two (or three) engines use the same block. Namely, the V8 Short Block.

351M/400- Modified. This motor uses the V8 "Long Block". (the one used for the really big engines-400, 427,428,429.) This engine is more like the big ones than your standard 5.0L.

The thing you have to keep in mind is that the engine you have will not bolt-up to just any Trannsmission. The block is different.

You shouldn't have any problems ordering your parts if you keep in mind that the 351M is not the same as the others. When ordering, they'll ask, "Windsor, Cleveland, or Modified?" Now you know how to respond. I know that your local Parts store should have 4-bbl Carbs sitting on the shelf. You may have to order the intake, but now you can do that with ease!

I don't know which 'underbody parts' you might have questions about, but your engine mounts will be OK if it came from the factory with them. (Same with your driveline parts...Tranny, u-joints...etc) If you have to replace the engine/Transmission mounts, you can order them, too! (Look to see if the engine rocks side-to-side when you start it and it idles.)

Re: LOTS of STUPID question

I have to ask, Why are you looking for a "high rise" intake ?
You should have a sticker on your Valve cover that tells which motor you have. 351M or 400M. Stock the 400M is only about 20 hp more than the 351M depending on what year you have. Basically the only difference between the two.
Those motors respond well to the addition of Intake, Carb and headers.
