Power Steering

Hey does anyone know what could cause power steering to squeak? Mine has been squeaking for about 2 weeks now. I've tried tightening and loosening the belt.. no change. Put a new belt on... stopped for a day... then I had a power steering leak and brought it the dealership... quit for bout a week... now it squeaks when its cold... but only when i start... can anyone help?

i would make sure all the air is out of the system and to do that while the engine is running take the cap off and turn the wheels to the left and right all the way a few times. if it leaked there may be a fil of oil on the pullys so take the belt off and clean all the pullys with laquer thinner and make sure the belt is the right length on our on work van the belt was like a 1/2 inch too long and it squeecked like a mother

dang that sux... i gotta clean the pulleys... they are hard to get to lol

hey someone told me that if i sprayed carburator cleaner on the inside of my belt that it would clean the pulleys and i wouldn't have to do it with that lacquer.. think this will work?

yea but make sure you dont get any on the the seals cause you'll be replacing them

lol... that would suck... i might try belt conditioner again... tried it once and it did nothing... it was weird today it didn't squeak until I was around a lot of people wtf

How many miles do you have on the belt? It might need changing. Hope it's not the bearings on pump

well it has prolly about 1k on it.. i changed the belt not too long ago.. if its the bearings then i gotta get a new pump?

Yeah, probably. Best ways to check are to remove the belt and see if the shaft has any wobble, or remove the pump get it on the bench and use an indicator to check for play.

i got some belt conditioner and sprayed it on there... it stopped for now... anrd hopefully for good i'll update you on the squeaks

sorry it took soo long... the squeaks didn't stop, but i also found out that its not my power steering belt. (i never got the chance to look at the pulleys while someone else was turning the steering wheel) well its the other pulley ( dunno what its called... the big one by the power steering pumo for the 4 cyl. tibs) anyways... i had an oil leak... and i think that some oil got on there.. gonna try to clean it tommorow but we'll see...
