01 Jimmy, OBD II code

Getting OBD II code: P 0410 Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction
Cannot locate any info on this or what to look for. Nothing listed in the Haynes book. Vehicle manual, says it could be gas cap or different fuel. Mechanic said gas cap was bad (changed out cap) & to use Premium grade gas. The Service Engine light came back on at 187 miles & again at 287 miles - same code P0410.

Any help will be appreciated; the local shop mechanic had $ in his eyes when I asked about this.

Here's the story on the P0410:

The AIR pump adds air to the exhaust stream to lower emissions. It does this by taking in outside air and pumping it through two one-way check valves into each bank of the exhaust.

About 90% of the time that this code is set, the one-way check valves have worn out or failed and allow water (which occurs naturally in the exhaust) back into the pump. In any cold climate, especially in the northeast with higher humidity, this water may be more excessive. The water partially fills the AIR pump, it can then freeze. When the PCM commands the pump on, if the pump is frozen it cannot turn, thus overloading the circuit and "popping" the fuse.

As far as the location of the fuse, it is in the right front fender well beside the battery, and in front of the horn there.

Sometimes replacing the fuse will fix all your problems and you are all set until next winter when it all happens again.

Also, sometimes water is allowed to enter the pump through the intake side of the system (just a 5/8" hose behind the fan shroud) and ruins the system that way. -I'll talk about that in a moment.

GM says that when this system failure occurs due to water intrusion, the pump MUST be replaced. I have had decent luck just blowing the pump out with direct power provided by a test bettery out of the vehicle, and saving the customer some $$$

GM has also released a remote air intake kit that includes a longer 5/8" hose, a control solenoid, and a one-way check valve to eliminate most possibility of water intrusion.

Like I said before, sometimes just blowing out the motor and replacing the fuse will solve your problem. BUT, to truly repair the problem correctly the AIR pump, the fuse, and the exhaust check valves must be replaced, and the remote air intake kit must be installed. $$$

I have much experience with this AIR system. Here in the northeast it is a BIG problem, and we have replaced at least 100 AIR pumps in the last 2 years or so.

If your vehicle is still under warranty, then you are lucky. --> The exhaust check valves usually wear out after 3-4 years thus, putting most vehicles out of warranty coverage.

Hope this explains the infamous (at least here in the northeast) P0410.

Thanks for the help. In thinking back, this occurred the first time a few days before the record snow storm here in Galveston County, TX on Christmas Day 2004 (mid 30 temps) & again, this past week with colder weather (mid 40 temps).

As luck goes, no warranty, bought as used vehicle.

i'm having the same problem with p-0410. I'm not sure how to go about fixing it. I checked the fuses, how do i tell they need replacing. where do i find the pump and how do i blow it out. How do i know it needs relacing. Where can i find the exhaust valves and how do i know they need replacing.

Sorry to bump and old thread.. but.. I have this same problem.. And.. Im curious to know.. is there any kind of way to bypass this system?.. There has to be.. I just don't know it.. Im thinking of just taking the whole studid thing off.. be that it doesn't affect performance or anything.. Just have to figure out somehow to wire it.. or somethign so that the light does not come on any more.. I don't think just unpluggin it will do the trick?.. but I dunno.. anyone have ne ideas on this? pretty eratating with the stupid ses light being on all the time for the last two months..

I am having the same problem as well. I was able to find the pump and check valve at gmpartsdirect but I can't find the remote air intake kit. Does anyone know where I could get one or at least the part number for it?

My Jimmy has remote oil filter, accessible through a door just behind the front bumper. I had to take out the bolts and remove the plastic assembly that the cover hangs on to see the pump, just behind the bumper towards the passenger side. It looks kind of like a bell shape enclosure with hose connections and electrical connector. Follow hoses from there to see check valves described in GMC Tech's most excellent posting.
The fuse is right where he said, but I had to really look close to see the fuseholder, mine had a cover over it.
Now,can you bypass it? Didn't see a practical means, probably not legal anyway,however....
This test that sets P0410 did not run immediatley on my vehicle after being reset (During cold weather). It seemed that you had to drive over 100 miiles before it set the check engine light. Reset it drove 100 miles, ran over to inspection station, states computer crap said AOK. If state says its OK, I must agree with them...
I put the new pump on the shelf until next year, if I need it...

I am having the same problem. This will be my second time replacing the AIR pump. I have called a number of Chevy and GMC dealers and noone seems to know anything about the remote air intake kit. Can you give me some more info. on that kit. Thanks.
