JGC blows heat all the time YIKES!

I just bought a 1996 JGC 6cyc 4.0L. Whenever the fan is turned on, in manual or auto, with or without A/C turned on, it blows very HOTair. We were told by a dealer mechanic that it needed a new A/C Compressor. But when I turn on the AC I can trace ice cold pipes all the way from the compressor to the inside of the vehicle, under the dash.
What is the mechanism that selects between the AC and the heater. Any idea's on the component I can check or replace to troublshoot? Also should the heater coil even have hot water flowing in it when the heat is off and the AC is on?
This vehicle has the Automatic Temperature Control system, but even in manual mode, with AC on, and the thermostat dialed down to low. It still blows hot hot air. Simultanious to that I can reach under the glove box and feel how cool the AC coils are... so close, yet so far away!
Please help or point me in a direction for help.

the same thing was happening to my 97, all i did was unhook the fuse that controlled the auto temp control, and tried it again, my problem was fixed. no problems ever since.. good luck

it could be the blend door actuator,its an electric motor that moves the door that regulates the temp.does the ac control show ER after you turn it on?if it does,press the ac and recirc buttons and turn the temp knob one click clockwise.then press the ac button one time.this is how you get the codes out of the system.if it says 20 or 52,these are codes for the blend door not responding

same prob. Yo Cwalker' you saying u pulled the fuse and reinstalled it and no probs since?
If the blend door is not responding how do you fix this, got ER message too.
