Question '96 Jeep Grand Cherokee Engine problems.

My wife drives the above mentioned vehicle which has developed an unsual problem. It started this past summer while driving it in Phoenix, Az
the engine started stalling. The vehicle was resently serviced and everything checked out. Driving back in northern Az. everrything seem to work fine. Then the same thing occurred. My wife took it in to a reliable Service Center which replaced the alternator and battery. The Jeep was fine for awhile. If the vehicle was left in the garage for two days without being driven, the enigine was slow turning over and once started would not hold an idle for about five minutes unless you kept feathering the gas pedal. The amp gauge acted funny by wide swings from charging to discharging. Since then, it has been brought back into the same shop which ran a computer diagnostic and couldn't find any codes to signify a problem. Then we took it to an Auto Electric Shop, and they couldn't find anything wrong. We don't want to take it to the local Chrysler Dealer because they botced a prior repair and we submitted a formal complaint to their Customer Service Dept. Which we received a courteous reply but no action. Also, the cruise control would cut out intermittanly but the Auto Electirc shop could not locate the problem. Is it possible that this has a relavance to the problem.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: '96 Jeep Grand Cherokee Engine problems.

From what I've experienced with my 96', any low battery or bad battery connection,or charging condition will not allow the engine to idle. I"ve also read many threads here with similar issues. Low battery or charging system must take away too much voltage from the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor)or IAC(Idle Air Control valve) which effects idle. THe source of your problem is most likely the battery/charging system. Perhaps loose connection on ground, starter, etc. Perhaps corroded connection somewhere, sorry such a vague answer.

Grand Cherokee Engine starting problems.

Thanks for the reply. My wife will fax it over to the Auto Electric Shop where the vehicle is back now. Hopefully this will give them some idea what to look for. I will let you know of the outcome.
