Surging fast Idle when hot...

Hello

My 92 Rodeo (2.6 engine) gets a "Surging" fast idle when it heats up (anything above 1/2 on the temp gauge) ... By surging I mean that the engine idle races for a second or two then lower's only to race again in a moment or two...

Any thoughts

A follow up..

If I sqeeze the vacume line coming out of the thermal valve the idle seems to return to normal..ummm??

Does that mean the thermal valve is bad, ans should be replaced, or is it some other kind of vacume issue..??
