What amp for 800W, 2 ohm or 4 ohm?
Complete this setup:
Panasonic CQ-C9800U head unit w/ onboard digital 70W x 4 amp (more like 50x4 RMS) Kenwood KFC-1789ie 3-Way Speaker 7" pair (front) 110W RMS Kenwood KFC-6989ie 3-Way Speaker 6 x 9" pair (rear) 140W RMS Kenwood KFC-W3009 12" Subwoofer 400W RMS I've already got the head unit. I haven't gotten the speakers yet, but I like the way the Kenwood 7s and 6x9s sound. The Kenwood sub got good reviews on cardomain. What amp(s) do I need? Based on other recommendations, I'm thinking I need to power the whole system at around 100-120W to each of the 4 interior speakers and the sub at 400W. Is that right? Can I wire everything at 2 ohms to get more out of the amp? I'm after sound quality, and not spending huge amounts of money, but I want to feed the speakers what they need. If I could get the amp for $200 I'd be happy, $300 would be okay, considering I'm already spending $260 on the speakers, and what, at least $200 to have everything installed. Although honestly, the 50Wx4 that the head unit puts out sounded pretty damn loud to me before the stock speakers blew. All that was missing was the bass. Am I overlooking a cheap solution to this problem? But if 100x4 will make the music clearer, then it's worth it. |

Re: What amp for 800W, 2 ohm or 4 ohm?
I'd like to stay at $300 or less for all the speakers and sub. I don't know if I could buy something I haven't listened to though. I've listened to the kenwoods, and the 3-ways sound good to me. Granted, the lesser kenwoods don't sound that good. But if you've got suggestions I'll try to listen to them somewhere.
For the amp I was considering the MTX Audio Thunder895 ($280). Here's the specs according to cardomain: RMS Power @ 4 Ohms: 50W x 4 + 245W x 1 Bridged RMS Power @ 4 Ohms: 200W x 2 + 490W x 1 If I used this, would I be able to wire each pair of interior speakers in parallel at 200W x 2 at 2 ohms? So that each interior speaker would get 100w? And have I got the ratio right - that the 4 interior speakers put together should get about the same total power as the sub? |

Re: What amp for 800W, 2 ohm or 4 ohm?
FYI all those main stream brands are CRAP. MTX=CRAP, Kenwood(specially coaxials)=Crap. You will be VERY happy if you listen to what we recommend you, and youll easily beat all your friends witht here Kendwood setups.

he's not saying they're competition level or anything, but the AP and CA lines are reliable and put out their rated power. That said, I wouldn't own one, but I'm willing to spend more on amps so it's alright. For someone not willing to spend more they're a decent choice.
