Snow Tires
Anyone know or recommend any top quality snow tires that are out for stock WRX wheels? (2005) I think they're 16".
Stock tires are killing me in this snow. (Bridgestone :something

Re: Snow Tires
The stock tires are Bridgestone Potenza RE92's and I've never had a problem with them in the snow, having lived in north central PA for 3 years with heavy winter snow.
What kind of problems are you having? Keep in mind, you can't drive in dry conditions with snow tires and the more often you change tires, the more you risk messing up your rims.

Re: Snow Tires
the stock tires on the WRX that i got slips easily in snow. My mom's '89 Mercedes' tires(non-snow tires) are better in snow than mine. So i'm guessing either my dealer had a little fun with the WRX before selling it to me or ... yea that's the only thing I can think of. My driving is fine. I never went faster than 35 mph and accellerated slowly to get up there, yet i still slip all over the place.

Re: Snow Tires
If the roads are bad enough, it doesn't matter what tires you have on the car.
I've seen people with studded tires slide off the road under bad conditions.

Re: Snow Tires
I have Michelim Pilot Alpins on my STi, and we got 2 feet of snow here this weekend. As long as you remember that you can't stop, you're fine.

Re: Snow Tires
The Blizzaks are generally touted as the best snow tire out there, but I wouldn't know from personal experience since I live in a place where it doesn't snow.

Re: Snow Tires
Are Blizzaks studded? Our roads are often clear, but when it gets cold and it snows, the 1/2" that accumulates gets very slick because the rock salt won't melt it.

Re: Snow Tires
About tires,
High-performance tires are made from rubber that goes hard in the cold and offers almost no traction then. Studless winter tires (not M+S, but actual WINTER tires) are made from a rubber compound that stays softer in the cold. They also have lamellae that helps clear the tread of snow. Studs ONLY help on ice. They offer no help in the snow. In addition, to be able to retain the studs, studdable winter tires are made from HARD rubber that offers LESS traction in the snow than studless proper winter tires. So in short, get a set of studless proper winter tires. All-season tires are not so great, they are meant to be "best of both worlds" but are basically the worst of both worlds. |
