ECU w/exhaust question

I plan on dropping my tax refunds on a header and exhaust setup and I'v heard that after you do this it's a good idea to get your ecu programed to accomodate the new found air flow. I was just wondering if this was really nessecary or would resetting the ecu work just as well.
