trouble with 99 durango

stopped at red light and durango would not move when i gave it gas then died. started right back ,but check engine light came on did get it home,but doesn't want to change gears .

Sounds like maybe the output speed sensor located on the rear of the tranny. Mine has been bad for over a year but is only slow to shift at times but gas mileage seems better so I haven't fixed it. If that's it, the part is only about $25 or so at a parts store. To know for sure you need someone with a scanner to check it out. A buddy checked mine for free with his scanner.
