New owner 2001 JGC, go to dealer?

Hi everyone, I'm a new owner of a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7L 4WD. The jeep is in excellent shape and was just wondering what you folks do for the regular maintenance of it. Is it a good idea to have the tranny oil (ATF+4) and the transfer case oil change done at the dealer? Do they know the special oils required for the "beast"?
I have a great mechanic that worked on my possessed '96 Grand Caravan before I took ownership of the JGC. What special insructions should I tell him if I take the 2001 to him? I know of the ATF+4 for the transmission but what about this "special" oil from Mopar for the gears?

Thanks again for the help,

Happy Jeep'ing :-)

the only thing that takes any special Mopar Fluid is the Trac-Loc rear axle (if equipped) it needs Mopar Friction Modifier.

Hi dksob81, how would I know if I have the Trac-loc equipped? Is there an extra feature that is installed in the cab that would tell me right away if I have it?

Thanks again.

Happy Jeep'ing

Not in the cab, but you can look on the rear differential there would be a limited slip tag if you have the Trac-loc rear axle.

NOTE: there are 2 tags one tells the gear ratio and such about the axle, the other would tell you just if it is limited slip and so on. Also if the fluid was changed sometimes they don't put the tag back on _ I know this because it happened to me, the guy who owned it before I changed the fluid and never placed the tag.

if this happen you could jack the rear end up and spin one of the wheels if the other wheel spins the same way then it is a limited slip (trac-Loc).

I actually made a mistake on this original post, it's actually the opposite way, If both wheels are turning the same way = Limited Slip.

If they turn oposite way = No limited slip.
