Bad Tranny?

the only gear working right now is reverse. It almost seems like it wants to shift into a forward gear but will not. And my reverse lights are only working when it is in neutral. And the gear selector display is all misalligned. For instance when the tranny is in reverse, the indicator shows halfway between park and reverse, and neutral is right on reverse.

I also may have a bad CPI.

Its a 94 if I'm not mistaken. Your shift linkage may be out of adjustment. When you shift gears, do you hear a click through every gear?

Re: Bad Tranny?

will that cause the other gears to not work? I have to push up extra hard to get it into park, but it will click into all of them. It just isn't lined up on the indicator

If its hard to get it into park, the shift linkage is out of adjustment. IF though, you hear clicks as you change gears from park through to the forward gears, at least three clicks, you would be in some forward gear. If you have no movement, you have a problem. Did you do all the genral checks, like make sure the fluid level is proper, its not burnt which would indicate internal problem.

Re: Bad Tranny?

fluid looks fine. I believe my CPI is bad as well. It is running extremely rich and kind of rough. I have heard that that can mess with the transmission as well due to the change in vacuum pressure.

Yeah it will cause a problem, but if you have no forward movement, or gears, a poor running engine will not prevent you from having forward gears.

Removing it or rebuild it? Rebuild is pretty stright forward, if you havn't done one before, get a good manual and follow it to word for word. Removing it is not that hard, but is time consuming, as you have to get some other things off before you can get to the transmission.

Re: Bad Tranny?

yeah, I have removed my share of transmissions before. It was the rebuild part I was wondering about. I have never tried one before

To make it a lot easier, get a good rebuild kit from a good source. It will contain 99.9% of the parts you will need to replace. I have never bought anything like this before on E-bay, but I have seen some good kits, so that can be a place to look at.
