Blower Troubleshooting

My blower quit working yesterday, it just stopped dead. It won't work on high or low. I couldn't find a blown fuse, I checked the HVAC one, low blower, high blower, and even the radio fuse. What other common causes do people know of for the blower refusing to work? Are there any easy tests to troubleshoot? Thanks for any help!

which HVAC system do you have? The automatic dual control heater, or the manual heating system?

I have the manual heating system, with the little rotating knobs.

I think the manual system has 3 larger knobs in a row, depending on the year, with no digital readout. The automatic system has a temp control for driver and one for passenger. If I know for sure, I can look at the current flow diagrams in my factory manual.

Yep, as I said I have the manual system. I notice the blower control knob feels a bit different when I turn it, but I'm not sure if this is my imagination or not. If I pull the panel off, I assume there will be a fairly easy way to jump the switch to test it. Unfortunately the Chilton's manual is good at telling you what you should test, but not how to test it.

Looks like the low blower fuse can stop all the fan speeds from working. The power is still supplied thru this fuse to the hi speed fan too - it powers the coil part of the high speed fan relay.

It should be on the fusebox on the right end of the dash, 1st column, 2nd row down - should be a 20A

I have checked all the fuses, they're all fine. At this point I assume it's probably either the switch or the blower. If I pull the blower, can I jumper it right to a car battery, or should I use lower voltage on it to test it?

I'd think the car battery would be way too powerful to test the blower. I'd go to a junkyard and ask if they have a return policy. If so, get the control unit, go home and swap them out. If it's still giving you issues, then it's probably the blower itself. I don't think it's the common problem, when they slowly die out...that usually means the blower has gone bad.

As an update, after I pulled the kick panel off of the passenger side, I could hear the blower clicking when I switch it to the two highest settings. Do I have a bad blower, or is it the relay I've seen mention of?

I replaced the blower, which I tested after pulling. It was bad. It seems the resistor/relay/whatever you wanna call it is also bad because the new blower only works on high. Anyone want to verify this diagnosis for me?

Probably the high amp draw from the bad fan motor burned out the resistor too.

It does sound like your resistor assembly is bad.
