Question 98 Jetta GLX VR6

Several issue:
1: "Check Engine Light" came on, dealership said it was an emissions code error, would have to lift up manifold to start determining the problem, 3 hrs just to do that. Is the dealership b/sing me?
2: Windows will no longer go up or down when I put the key into the drivers side door and turn it.
3: Can arm the alarm w/ the remote, light on drivers door does not come on. Put key in door, car door unlocks, but if you open the door the alarm goes off.

See if you can get the engine trouble code number. The second two are probably from the same problem; the driver's door lock sensor switch is not working in the unlock position. You'll need to go inside the door to check out the problem.

Re: 98 Jetta GLX VR6

That code is for incorrect flow detected at the secondary air injection pump. In fron of the engine you will see a plastic pump motor with a few rubber hoses and a plastic pipe that goes over to the air filter housing. Check the pressure hose that goes around to the exhaust side & the smaller vacuum lines that go to the valve/solenoid. If they're okay the problem is either the pump motor or the valve/solenoid has failed.

The dealership is telling me. 2 -3 hrs of troubleshooting time 1st. Then after that, may have to lift the manifold. At that point they will be able to get to the vacuum lines. Am I being BS'ed?

Ha... there arent any vacuum hoses inder the manifold. at least ones that you cant reach without taking the manifold off. Check the fuse for the secondary air pump (on firewall under plastic clear cap) THey usually blow. (its a40amp metal bar with 2 screws on both sides) Plus a vw dealer only charges 1hr diag for check lights)

OK, the light went back out yesterday. Has not come back on... Should I wait to see if it comes back on or is this something that could leave me dead on the side of the road?

The only real thing emissions related that would cause you extreemly bad drivability probs is a bad MAF sensor (600$) but since your car isnt running that bad right now i would say just pop the hood and check for any cracked vacuum hoses or look for oil residue on the intake pipe by the intake throttle body (the pcv portion of the intake pipe breaks spits some oil arround it and you have to replace the entire intake pipe.)

Re: 98 Jetta GLX VR6

It ended up being the vacuum lines, parts cost under $10. They charged me $250 in labor...
