89 Bronco 4x4 for 8 Dollers YES 8 Dollers

Yep its true my brother said if I could get it to crank it was mine good thing too hence I am just now getting back on my feet from Chemotherapy two years ago no job no money but at least I have my health back. Anyways he was saying the problem was in the clutch interlock switch. Wrong it was the starter solenoid cost me Eight bucks. And now I’m the proud owner of an {89 Bronco II 4X4 2.9 liter}. Now it has been sitting for years about three I believe, but the interior is in great shape like new. I have never had a 4x4 before looking forward to using it. I am a newby here so I hope there are replies and some good advice lord knows I need it. There are issues with the bronco that need attention so I am going to start a thread for each one so each post won’t get too long winded and hopefully I can get them resolved one at a time if and as I can. There are not a lot of problems so far. First of all it had hardly any gas in it so I put in five gal changed the solenoid and it cranked after all most killing the battery out of my pickup. It smoked it wheezed it coughed but it cranked. Little bit of white smoke but mostly black it cleaned up really well and the musty smell is almost gone, have put about 200 miles on it so far.

Have replaced the Air filter, Oil, oil filter, plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, muffler and tail pipe. The water pump started having a small leak at the shaft so I replaced it and a new T’stat. It runs pretty well but running rich especially at idle getting just under 10 mpg. Which starts off my first post here I was going to replace the O2 sensor but I have a two wire non heated type and the three Auto Part Chains here say the only on available for it is a three wire heated type and the wire are half the length.

So the issue here is I’m not sure if the two are inter changeable the one on it was two white wires and plugs into a small harness on top the bell housing of course the worst possible place so I haven’t been able to see it to see if the plug is the same maybe it just doesn’t utilize the third wire but since it is too short so would it be a cut and splice deal and if so does it matter about the polarity of the white wires I have not been able to see an identifying mark on mine or the new one. The Ford dealership was no help at all no info on how many wires nor a picture just could tell me the three are listed but only one is available. I have been reading the past post and the info on the fuel pressure regulator sounds like a place the start for problem of low mileage and the black smoke.

To mention here’s hoping for many informative and knowledgeable postings here I really need it.

First of all, the 2.9L Rangers came with a 4 wire or a 3 wire oxygen sensor. Originally, mine had a 3, and Napa keep superceeding the part number until eventually they gave me one with 4 wires. It worked out fine. I've never heard of a Ranger with a 2 wire, I think someone stuck that in there from something else.

If your computer is not getting a good signal from the o2, it will still run. The o2 isn't used until it's heated up and your ECC-IV has a built in table of values that it uses, until it can get accurate readings from the o2. I think it's around 600 degrees, but I could be wrong.

If you do have a incomplete o2 circuit, it will cause the motor to run rich. Better rich than lean. I notice when I drive my ranger cold it's not as toquey, then out of no where I can feel my o2 kick in and I can tell it's mixing the air fuel ratio much better. Although I do have a modified 2.9L.

To determine if you've got a bad o2, I would perform a KOEO test to see what your computer has to say about it. You might also pick up a few other things that are not working correctly.

Pete
