88 Gt

I have just completed rebuilding/restoring an 87 formula and am now looking for a new project car. I own an 89 firebird, but I this time I'm looking for something slightly smaller.

I remember the Fiero from years back and am still always surprised when I see one on the road. The numbers seem to dwindle with each coming year. This is why I've decided that restoring one would be worthwhile, so I can help keep these cars around.

I am currently looking for specific model/design. I like the improvements that the 88 had over the previous three years in terms of handling, suspension, and brakes. The other two requirements are a manual transmission and T-tops. Currently I am living in the Philadelphia area.

Thanks.

Re: 88 Gt

Any '88 is hard to come by, let alone one with T-tops. I know where there is one sitting in a junkyard in Ohio...I considered buying it for myself, but decided it would be too much work. Someone had taken off the sail panels and all the molding on the sides and bondo'd them smooth. If you'd still be interested, I'm pretty sure it would still be there.

You may want to occasionally check out www.forsale.fieropride.com. We list cars for sale for Fiero owners. You might even want to post a Wanted ad there.
Also, check out www.fierojon.com. Jon has some nice cars for sale sometimes.

Happy Hunting!

What could be better than another kind of Formula... the Fiero Formula! In 1988 Pontiac made the Formula Fieros, basically a V6 option on the coupe. You get the GT drivetrain (V6!!) and added rear swaybar over the 88 coupe, a spoiler, and it says Formula on the side. Oh and the rims are oh-so-pretty.

Re: 88 Gt

Avoid T-Tops at all costs! None are "factory", and a significant portion of the frame is removed from the roof section to make the tops fit. That WILL compromise structural rigidity and handling. The factory stuff has a sun roof option. My '88 GT has that. Wish it didn't...

Mr Pbody.. take a look at a headliner-less "solid"-roof Fiero at a salvage yard next time you're there. They have the same roof as your sunroof Fiero, just without the very thin Fiberglass portion removed from the center. You can even see the outline of the sunroof where the factory makes the cut.. so don't feel bad that your 88 GT has a sunroof. It's as solid as the non-sunroof cars .
As for the T-Top's roof, I have heard from T-Top owners that it does indeed decrease frame rigidity. Whether or not that makes a difference depends on what you do with the car. For autocross its a bad thing. Everyday driving? I don't think most people would care.

It is true that there are no "Factory" T-tops. Pontiac didn't even install the T-Tops on cars that were optioned with the CJB RPO code (available only on 88's). They shipped the cars to C&C for the T-top installation. The vast majority of non "CJB" T-Top Fieros have identical T-Tops installed by the same company before it became a factory option. C&C also installed T-Tops for other GM cars and even other car manufacturers. Another thing to be aware of is that T-Top parts are incredibly hard to find and thus very expensive.
