Factory Toyota CD Unit Operation
I have a 1998 Camry with a factory Toyota CD/Cassette/AM/FM Sterio Combo unit.
I have noticed that it is kinda picky when it comes to some of my CD,s I play in it.Once in awhile it sounds like it is skipping on a couple of the tracks and then today on a certain track it would not play, and the word "error" showed up on the display. The only CD,s that seem to effect it are the ones that I have been burnt by a friend, and NOT original CD,s. Are these factory Toyota Cd units rather touchy with some CD,s? Are there any type of CD Cleaners that can be installed and run thru the system? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...Chuck |

Re: Factory Toyota CD Unit Operation
I have the same problem. Part of the story might be the quality of the CDs. I only occasionally have a problem reading, never get an error message.

My Toyota OEM CD player in my 2000 used to be real bad until i used a CD Player Cleaner. It was a CD (bought at any record store) that has a place to drop some alcohol on and put it in the player and run for a moment or two. It cleans the laser unit I guess.
The player skipped much less after that. Although it does occasionally skip, just no where near as often. I only play CD-Rs in it, never the store-bought version because i don't want to damage or lose my originals. Never have seen an error message on mine. |

Re: Factory Toyota CD Unit Operation
The toyota CD Players are very touchy with burned CDs. My friend had one in his MR2, I had one in my Camry. They often didn't even play them at all, would just spit them back out. One trick I learned to help this is put the CD in, then as it is loading switch the player to radio. Wait a few seconds for the cd to spin up, once it is done switch to CD. This works sometimes however your best bet is to buy a new head-unit. Cleaning it as Don24mac has mentioned could help it with skipping. But in case it still rejects burned CDs you may just want to upgrade the head unit.

Re: Factory Toyota CD Unit Operation
Chuck,
I believe I have the same "3 in 1" unit in my wife's 98. It has never skipped and we play mostly burned CDR's. It will not play CDRW's at all. Since your's skips, I would suspect the quality of your burned CDR's. I have been burning CDR's for 6+ years and have rarely had a problem with any of them. My advice would be to slow down the burning process when burning a CDR. If I have plenty of time I still burn a CDR at 2X or 4X speed. Try to burn a couple at these slow speeds and then see how they play. Good luck. Mike |

Hello:I appreciate all of the very helpful information.
I think my main problem was that we were using some CD,s that has some scratches on them and that have beeen played many, many, times. My wife burn some new ones, and they are working fine. I will keep you informed if the problem accurs again. Best Regards...Chuck |
