is the 5.4 worth modding up

i am interested in the 2000 ford lightning. i was wondering if it is worth modding up. i would use it for drag racing and i want about 700 or more mabe. what performance companys do the lightning? im mostly looking for good pistons and rods to handle boost. i have been looking at the pro turbo kit. anyone know about it? is it good? i want a turbo but if not i can handle a supercharger. thanks guys for the help

First off, they are already supercharged. You will never get to 700 HP with a 5.4L, you simply cannot rev them fast enough. They make GREAT Torque, but are limited by their long stroke in the HP department.

VT engines can handle anything you want internally, but even with the best tuning around from SCT, and forged internals, it will never make 700 HP and stay togather.

Boost means nothing, except that the supercharger/turbocharger is trying to push more air in than the engine can injest. What you REALLY want to maximize is FLOW.

Boost does not really hurt the rods, RPM does. Boost will kill pistons due the the added heat associated with increased boost, which leads to knock.

If you are going to drag, do not use a 5.4, you might something like a winsor block. there are some nice ross pistons available for 351's. Although, the 5.4 is a bbf bellhousing if i remember right. your best bet would be a c-6, 351w and a 9 inch for drag racing.

The F-super Duty trucks have turbo'd diesels, that will make over 400 HP to the wheels, and spank nearly any medium modded Mustang at the track.

Though not unique, they are VERY fast.

First off, the 5.4L does not have a bbf bellhousing and a c6 will never bolt up. If it did, though, your check engine light would always be on and you would never run right, as your PCM uses input from your Transmnission sensors to make fuel control decisions. If you REALLY want to get that truck moving, though, you'd use an engine out of a supercharged mustang. The bottom end of those are so overbuilt, they can handle over 1000 HP without taking the pan off. One warning, those supercharger pulleys are fine. If you change it to a different sized aftermarket one, you'll over-spool it and throw the inners down the intake. Chips, exhaust and intake make a big difference. I think 700 is kinda optimistic, though.

I go with chevyman on this. Go old school, windsor,c6 and good old ford 9" Those were the days when the size of the engine was grand.
