So, what type of performance does the944 have?

Well, I thought that my GP GT was pretty OK from the line and handling, with the add ons. Then I got my 944 and it will just kick the GP's butt all over the place, and that would be from the line; the Porsche's weakest attribute. Handling, the Porsche's strongest attribute, it's like reasonably acceptable vs. outstanding.

Of course, not to down talk the GP too much, it's pretty good compared to some of the other cars that are out there. It's not a sports car, it's a mid-sized sporty family four door at a mid-ranged price, while the Porsche is a race-bred, mid to entry level, sports car with it's focus on handling and not off the line.

Now, some of the newer Porsche's have a lot more HP/LBS, and that of course would make them a lot better off of the line than mine, but then we stray from the mid to entry level machine.

All of the above is IMHO, and subject to change without notice.

the normally aspirated 944 is equipped with a single over head cam 2.5Litre all aluminum motor. this is a bigger motor than the preludes 2.2. Handling and autocross is what this car is made for. It can also take out civics and accords pretty easily. Horsepower for the turns.

The 951 is great! awsome car, just remember when buying one, most of the time if you buy a 951 for $6000 your going to have to put $6K into it to bring it up to par

Most of the time?
Get a PPI if you don't know about them...
They are quite reliable when serviced well...

The engines AND Turbo's simple last a LONG time and were very well made!

Listen kid i got a 944s when i turned 18 and i recommend it . but, you have to make a investment for life. once you go german you never go back, however it gets expensive for repairs and time consuming. and to top it off its not a winter car. Im from minnesota and the fact is even with snow tires the ground clearance is less than stellar.

I'm a new porsche owner and couldn't be happier. I've been driving old beaters and finally got a nice car. Handling and power yada yada yada... you need the money to maintain it. I've spent almost $200 on my 944 in the past month. But those repairs were minor, if you decide to go with the 944 make sure the timing belts, clutch, tranny and all other high priced parts are replaced. It is a great car to drive even if it doesn't pull you back in your seat. And, if your fifteen and own a porsche..hmmmmm.

Yea, you are right. Those are the high priced, non-optional maintenance for the 944. But I'm glad that they are fairly far between them.

im not impressed with my 944 really at all, im trying to sell it and get a honda, im sure it was hott back in its day but i had a neon that was more fun to drive than this car. for beening 16 years old it runs really good thou, and im sure the engine needs to be rebuilt, sure it will rape a v6 mustang and some of the gt's even but mustangs arent really that fast. also hadles really good

Well, I had a beautiful 86 944 n/a, and I was completely disappointed in it. I have owned quite an array of sportscars and the 944 was nothing to brag about. I could go on and on about the pros that other cars had over the 944, and the only pro the 944 had was that it was a Porsche. I will not even go into the drawbacks of the car, just that of all the cars I would recommend, the 944 is not one of them. Also, for the record, the car was not a lemon. I actually always loved the 944 until I owned one. Perhaps I wouldn't feel so disappointed had it been a 951.
