Replace power antenna with standard on 94 camry

I have a 94 camry that has gone through two power antennas. I don't want to put the money into another, so picked up a cheap standard antenna. We hooked it up per instructions (I think), but I get no am station reception and only a few fm stations. Other fm stations are very static-y. What did we do wrong? Are more expensive antennas better?

Am planning to replace my radio / tape deck with a radio / cd player. What will I need to do that?
