81 parisienne problems

I have a parisienne with a 305. When i put it in gear it stalla and if i manage to keep it running it stubles and coughs. With no load on it it runs great. I checked teh timing replaced the cap rotor wires plugs and some other things. The egr has been removed and blocked off. The charcoal canister has been removed and so has te pcv valve. It has 18in of vacume.

When it stumbles & coughs, do you smell gas... see black smoke comming out of the exhaust?? Is it all the time, or only when the engine s cold?? What's the position of the Choke (wide open, closed, part way)Sounds like its in the carb.... Is it the stock carb???

Also, I'd put the PCV back in. It helps remove pressure build up in the crank case... unless you're running a Vac. Pump. But since those are pretty much race only, I doubt you have one.

I have clamp on breathers on the valve covers. It does it wether it cold or hot and there is no smoke coming out of the exhaust. How do i tell if the choke stays on or not. It has the stock quadrajet carb. Coudl it be a plugged converter cuz ill axe it if i have to.

Coverters don't usually plug completly shut... Like it'd have to be to cause your problem. Usually they'll let the car run fine for a bit, then all the backpressure will cause funky probs.

Choke: Remove the aircleaner lik... look at the carb, on top there are 3 openings... two on the back, and one rectangular one on the front. All 3 sets have a metal flap at the top that closes. The rear's should stay closed.. you should never see them open (they only open under load at almost WOT). The front is the choke. With the car off & engine cold. Tap the gas once, just a bit. you should see that flap snap shut. Have a friend crank the car, If it starts it should open about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch. to let air in.

If it doesn't shut it won't run right at start, but will run. But if it's stuck shut, it'll make the car sputter, cough.. be real hard to keep running (if not impossible).

Sounds like a place to start.

Good Luck

Re: 81 parisienne problems

What kind of QJ do you have? Is it computer controled or one of the older carbs without the electronics.

Re: 81 parisienne problems

Its possible that the problem is in the carb. Maybe a bad accelorator pump or a bad power valve. Could even be a clogged port in the carb base plate, only way you can tell is by swapping carbs. Also the 81 Parisienne had a lock up torgue convertor in it its is possible that the convertor could be locked up and wont disengage. I have seen this many times in the past. The symtoms would be engine run good with out a load but when put in gear the engine stumbles and stalls.

Also the other guy may be right the catalytic convertor could be clogged. That one should have a duel bed cat. On the bottom of it it should have a round plug in it that you can knock out and release all the pellets from it and put a freeze out plug back in. It wouldnt hurt it to leave it empty.

Re: 81 parisienne problems

A 200 4R torque converter is different from a 200 convertor. The only way I know how to check them is to replace them. Ya see in the dealer we have access to them.
