86 question about pollution control
The beast is back and I got all the repairs done, but I noticed something funny under the hood.
If you look down at the pollution control pump that is connected to the belt there is a hose that comes off it but on mine there is a little nozzle that sticks out to the side of it. It looks like a hose could go there but I'm not sure if there is one supposed to be there. I was wondering if anyone knew about this. I'll try to get a pic up of it shortly. |

Here are the pics. It looks like a nozzle of some sort where a hose could go, but I would have no clue where it would connect. Its like a T shape with the open end.
From farther away its pretty much dead center in the pic http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ae/Carpump.jpg A closer one showing it http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...pumpcloser.jpg If anyone knows if its just a regular hose I could poach at AutoZone or something, and where it connects to I would be very greatful. I have been having some issues with how smooth the car is running lately (rough idle, even while in gear.) Perhaps this could be causing it.... I took off my battery for the night to clear some bad codes so hopefully that will be all I will have to do, or maybe adjust the idler. |

I just had the throttle body replaced this week, the spark plugs I replaced a few months ago, the cap, wires, and dist are less than a year old. The mech that did the work told me to leave it disconected from the battery overnight since he did alot of work. He said there were a lot of leftover codes that needed to be cleared. Then he told me to adjust the idle as I see fit. I'm pretty sure he checked for vacuum leaks also.
I'll start it up tomarrow and see if it runs alright. Would you know if anything connects there though? |

no i dont no what gos there but i do no if u take both battery cables off and touch them together for 15-20 seconds it will clear just about everything so u might wanna try that but as for the emissions thing good luck

Well I reconected the leads to the battery and it did....nothing.
I know my spark plugs, wires, dist + cap are fine but it is still idling at varying RPM's and still stalls. Its not a misfire because all cylinders are firing. It doesn't shake and there is no lifters/knock noise. I've adjusted the idle screw and at max opening it finally starts to smooth out in park, but the instant you shift it revs up then stalls. Anyone had the same problem where the engine keeps stalling? Could the air pollution pump be a vacuum leak source? |

Quote:
Have you checked fuel pressure? With key on engine off you should have 35-45PSI How long has it been since fuel filter was changed? Maybe check plug firing order to make sure plug wires are not mixed up after recent work. Re-check that all spark plugs are firing. On 8 cyl you can still loose a cylinder (or even 2 - if on opposite sides) and still not get a great deal of shaking on idle. |

Well I verified that the air pump is supposed to have that valve open so no hose goes there.
I'm pretty sure that the engine has a good firing order and its just not getting enough gas. I heard I should check the IAC. Anyone know how tough that is to get off the intake? I'll check out my fuel filter soon too. |

Re: 86 question about pollution control
How about the Idle Air Valve/Motor? Mine wouldn't idle properly until I replaced it. There are several posts, some started by me. If you do a search you should find them.

If that is the same thing as the IAC (Idle Air Control) then I took a look at it already. I removed it from the intake and it looked very clean for its purposes. I also had the car running and I disconnected the wire from it and the car stalled so it shows it is running properly.
I hope I find this out.... Is the valve for the IAC part of that setup or is it part of the intake itself? I don't think I have any vacuum leaks.... |

Re: 86 question about pollution control
There may be enough input from the IAC that it allows the car to run, but not smoothly. There's a voltage test for it I'm sure, but I never got that fat - just replaced it.
