No Snow Chains on a Yukon??

I have a '04 Yukon 2WD with 265/70-17 tires. The manual states that you can not put snow chains on these tires. What are you suppose to do when snow chains or 4WD are required? Has anyone put chains on these tires anyway?

Thanks,

John

I have the same question, does anyone have the answer. Will "S" Class chains work? Thanks.

Have you ever thought about studded snow tires. I would hate to have a chain break and beat the crap out of the side of my 45k Yukon.

if it were a true 4 wheel drive, it wouldn't need chains !! the newer transfer case are just not made for serious snow.

I'm sorry if this seems a silly question but why in the world would you buy a 2WD Yukon to begin with if you need to drive someplace that has snow or ice?

If you're interested. I'm selling my 96 Yukon SLE 4x4. It's fully loaded with every available factory option including a posi-traction rear end.

I don't live in the snow, only drive in it occasionally.

I've never had a problem driving in the snow with a 2WD and chains (with a posi-trac rear end). If I had known I couldn't put chains on my 2WD Yukon I would have thought twice about buy it!

Re: Chains

In California, there are 3 levels of chain control. R1 is chains or snow tires; R2 is chains or 4 wheel drive with snow tires and carry chains; R3 is chains on all vehicles.
I just purchased a Yukon Xl with the larger 17" tires and am interested int what others have done about chains.

alanarmstrong, do the stock M+S (mud & snow) tires satisfy the "snow tires" requirement?

Any tire that has "M+S" on the side wall will pass as a snow tire in California. I had the same question a few years ago and called the CHP office in Sacramento to get the answer.

Re: No Snow Chains on a Yukon??

I bought a set of SCC Z LT cables. They meet the SAE class S clearance requirements for vehicles with limited clearances. They work great on my Yukon!

Re: No Snow Chains on a Yukon??

Did you confirm that the Yukon (we have a 2003) is class S clearance? How did you find out - since it is not in the owner manual.

Thanks, Simon

I didn't find anything that states the Yukon needs class S clearance. I just assumed because they state you can't use chains because of clearance limitations. Also, I've heard from other Yukon/Tahoe owners that have been using Class S cables without a problem.

I used my SCC Z LT cables a lot over the holidays and had know problems (we got a lot of snow in the Seirra Mountains).
