Heater Fan Only works slow on 3rd Position..97 Metro

4 position dash heater switch seems to click at each stop...but fan only blows 1/4 speed at 3rd position. Other 3 positions does not produce heat at all. Any suggestions?

Re: Heater Fan Only works slow on 3rd Position..97 Metro

I have a similar problem on my 97 Metro. 1st (slowest) fan speed inop, 2nd position works intermittently (when cold outside), and #3 and 4 are OK. I found that if I pull down on the switch in #1 and 2 positions, it works. This leads me to believe the points in the switch aren't making contact (or only do when thermal expansion/contraction allows it). My guess at a solution: either take out switch and attempt to repair or replace with a new switch. I've lived with it for a while only because I'm not all sure how to get to the switch w/out removing entire dash. Any ideas?

Re: Heater Fan Only works slow on 3rd Position..97 Metro

Most likely you are correct. You need to remove and/or separate the two halves of the switch. As you remove and disassemble the switch be careful not to lose track of the small bearing and two springs. Clean the 3 point copper contact plate on one half and clean the other half that includes copper circuitry.
Use a liquid cleaning agent (I used acetone) followed by emery paper polishing. Be careful not to overdo it as you COULD damage the copper plating. The contact points are delicate and can be bent/adjusted with the spring underneath. Using rubber bands and/or zip tie will keep everything snug together during reassembly. Cannot be too loose or overtightened. You do NOT have to remove the upper dash area. Only the verticle front face panels, radio and maybe lower console under the ashtray. We are talking approx a dozen screws total. Depending on how fast and focused you are...it will take 45-90 min. See my earlier two threads on this procedure.
