Check engine light after replacing fuel pump!!!

I own a 95 Olds Aurora. My check engine light did not come on immediately after changing the fuel pump, but a few days later. (To be honest, I have no idea if the check engine light is a direct result of changing the fuel pump, or a pure quincidence and not related at all.) I happen to own a Snap-on 2500 scanner so I ran the scanner on my car to see what the codes are. There are four codes.

36 EGR Pintle Position out of range
52 Defective ECM (ECU RAM Chip Error)
70 Intermittent throttle Position
109 Internal ECM Problem (KAM checksum)

Other than the check engine light, the car is running great. No problems at all with the running of the car itself, other than the check engine light and the codes it displayed.

Any ideas why I'm getting these codes? I asked my dad and he says you are supposed to reset the ECM after changing out a fuel pump. He says you are supposed to pull the fuse. But I looked in the manual for the car and I don't see a fuse for the ECM. I just cleared the codes with the scan tool so the check engine light isn't on anymore. I'll see if it comes back in the next few days. Any ideas why I"m getting these errors?

Re: Check engine light after replacing fuel pump!!!

Hey there dmorlow,
I hope you put in a dealer fuel pump...Not aftermarket
Thats good that you cleared the codes. Now see what happens if the check engine light comes on again. Don't go far from home until your sure the check engine light situation is solved. You can always try to call a dealer (Olds) (GM) ask for service dept., and say that you have a code or two and what does it mean?
Happy New Year!!

Well, it is a true AC Delco fuel pump. But I did clear the codes. I'll see if they come back today on the way to work.

Well, I never got to see if the check engine light came back on. The car never started back up after that day. But I have another thread going about that issue. This is probably directly related to that. But the check engine light might not be related. I don't know.

Who did the fuel pump job. Check the fuses. If the dealer or a shop did
the job tow it back to them and have them check it. Warranty on Parts & Labor should kick in, since this was just done. (there was a recall on the fuel rail & FPR).

Ok... I changed the fuel pump myself. But I checked the fuses and the relay before changing it out. I actually put a brand new relay in just to see if that was the issue. The fuse is fine.

Call a (shop) that does driveability or (Dealership), and find out these codes that came up:
36 EGR Pintle Position out of range
52 Defective ECM (ECU RAM Chip Error)
70 Intermittent throttle Position
109 Internal ECM Problem (KAM checksum)

One of these codes or several may be why your not able to start-up.
The fuel pump probable is OK...but these codes are telling you (the technician) that there is another problem. If you find out what the
codes relate to, you then can have the car towed in and fix the problem. The fuel pump has nothing to do with the check engine light.
