Question 94 Grand Am - Radio wiring diagram

Hey everyone,

I'm replacing the stock stereo in a 94 Grand Am with an aftermarket model. (quad 4 engine if that makes a difference)
I am looking for a wiring diagram of the wiring harness (ie, which 2 wires are the front right speaker, which 2 are the front left etc).
I have looked in my Hayes manual, and can't find anything.

Thanks,
Josh

Try page 12-51 of your Haynes manual.

Re: 94 Grand Am - Radio wiring diagram

LOL, mine are on page 12-47 ('01 GA) of the haynes manual. Plus in my head since I used to be an installer. For the price of a Haynes manual (CDN$23 tax in at Canadian Tire) it is worth it's weight in gold. You can't find everything in the manual, but in a jamb it's pretty good.

PS: I'm pretty sure on the factory delco that the wiring legend is stamped on the metal case.

Re: 94 Grand Am - Radio wiring diagram

Yeah he did. Woops, I didn't realize he already looked in the manual. lol. Sorry, my bad. Maybe I should edit my post....nah. Because I made fun of josh, I'll be nice and post the legend.

yellow=12v acc.
orange=12v constant

lt blue=rr spkr -
dk blue=rr spkr +
yellow=lr spkr - (not to be confused with yel 12v acc)
brown=lr spkr +
dk green=rf spkr -
lt green=rf spkr +
gray=lf spkr -
tan=lf spkr +

gray=dimmer switch
brown=park lights

black/white stripe=ground

Note: As you can see there are a couple of wires that are the same colour. So MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE TO CHECK THE WIRES WITH A VOLT METER.

When testing the yellow wires, one of them should read 12v when you turn the ignition to "run". When you turn the key off it should read 0v. This will be the yellow 12v acc wire, the other will be the spkr wire.

When testing the brown wires, one of them will read 12v when you turn on the park lights, and then 0v when you switch them off. The other brown wire will be the spkr wire.

When testing the gray wires, turn on the park lights. While watching the volt meter dim and brighten the dash lights back and forth, you will notice one of the gray wires go from 0v to 12v gradually as you move the dimmer switch back and forth. That will be the gray dimmer wire, the other will be the spkr wire.

Once you find which wires are which, double check all the speaker wires to make sure none of them show ground. If all is ok, you are good to go.

HTH
Marc
