Ka-t

Anyone have any recommendations on rebuilding a S13 KA24 for medium boost? Is there any need for forged parts, or should I just worry about fuel delivery? I've been reading that the KA takes well to boost, but then elsewhere I've read it doesn't.... Trying to clear up the truth from the BS...

Also, XAT racing sells KA turbo kits made by boost designs.... I've never heard of this company, and I'm wondering if you guys know anything about the kits, like design flaws, shit like that. Here is the link:

http://www.xatracing.com/xatracingpa...2col1=KAT.html

Last question is; how does the tranny hold up under boost?

Re: Ka-t

my advice is to go look at threads already done about the ka-t.. even look at the ka vs sr threads cause there's a lot of good info there but DON'T START ANOTHER KA VS SR THREAD NOR REVIVE A THREAD MORE THAN 3 WEEKS OLD please.
rebuilding is always a good idea. i'll be doing mine sometime within the next couple of months since my plan is ka-t.
the setup you have will be determined by what kind of power you want to put to the ground. the more power you want the more parts you're gonna need.
if you want, look around for turbo kits. there's a couple of them out there but at the same time look around for the same parts in these kits and see which is cheaper (piecing one together or buying the kit) and you'll most likely find that piecing one together is cheaper.. the kits you posted aren't full of top of the line shit.. you could still spend less and get things like SAFC II, 480cc injectors, etc..
for your trannie question, the oem one is fine if you're only planning on 'medium' boost, which i would consider less than 300whp

Re: Ka-t

yeah, I'm looking to run about 280~ whp, since it's going to be a daily driver.

I figured that kit wasn't the best, and I do have some knowledge with piecing together a custom kit, but I don't know of any places where I can get these things (particulary the manifold), but I'll check around the old threads.

Shop

yes we just aquired a shop yesterday as a matter of fact i was web based but i now see i am needing more room to proto and design so i thought it would be a good business decision to do so plus we are going to start installing kits on cars we purchase and start selling them here and perhaps on ebay. we will post the new shop on the site in the next week when we start moving in.

Re: Ka-t

If this is your first time doing a KA-T kit and you are shooting for 280whp, you should probably do yourself a favor and swap out the pistons. And start low too. Just do a five or six psi setup for a little while to get used to fixing small things first. I'm glad I've been running 6psi. I didn't know about the base timing thing and I would have popped a ring land for sure if I was running like 8 or 9. Good luck and do a lot of reading.

Re: Ka-t

The rebuild will come first and I will break the motor in N/A... the turbo won't come till later, after I work out all the kinks...

I planned on starting out at about 5psi, work out any problems, tuning etc, and work my way up.

I'm not unfamiliar to the aspect of forced induction, and I'm well aware of the problems you can run into... Try dealing with a turbocharged saturn, and you'll know what I mean, haha

Re: Ka-t

I wasn't sure if you had any expirience. If you have turbocharged a Saturn, then it should be pretty straight forward for you. Good luck.

Re: Ka-t

so, how about this nissan hp engine kit boostdesigns is selling... It comes with wiseco pistons, but doesn't say if they're forged or not... I would assume they are, but you never know.

I'm sure I could get all the things cheaper if I just purchased them seperately from different vendors, but I don't know where to go to get the best prices... Anyone on here have any connections?

Re: Ka-t

They are forged. Wiescos are good pistons. I was thinking of getting that kit. But if you just plan on making 280whp, a piston swap will suffice. Look at spending about $400-$500 for the pistons. Boostdesigns will get you good prices. They have some of the best prices for stuff I have seen so far. Good company too. I have heard nothing but good things about them. Give em a call. I'm sure they can get you a set.
