86 Tercel Transmission change?

I have a 1986 Tercel and something is wrong with the transmission. It is a manual. The car will pull forward but not drive.

The mechanic (amatuer) says he has to take the entire body off to get the transmission out and replace it. Can this possibly be true?

Thanks,
Larry

Re: 86 Tercel Transmission change?

I am not familiar with the manual transmissions but if you check the repair manual in a library or an on-line library that should give a good explanation.

Cheers

transmission problem ?

well, last time i checked, you don't have to pull the body off of a car just to get the transaxle out, problem #1, its a toyota, which means its unibody construction, therefore, you cannot take the body off of the car... the body and the frame are welded together, or integrated, as one. I have a 1990 tercel and there's a total of 4 motormounts holding the engine/transaxle in. all i did was take off the two on the transaxle, unbolt all the bellhousing bolts, and sild it out, and dropped it down under my car... that's the easiest way to get it out that i've found. as far as the car moving forward but not driving, sounds like a clutch problem more than a transaxle problem... toyota's transaxles are very durable under most driving conditions... now to your "Mechanic" ... he's a true blue DUMBASS and he needs bitch-slapped.
