Erratic gas gauge

88 camry. The gas gauge bounces between E and half. when tank gets low. No leaks like a previous post, so am I looking at replacing the sending unit?

It's what's called the "floater" on the fuel pump. Now in some cases, the rod that it's attached to gets bent, and can be bent back into place, but in most cases the repair causes inaccuracy in the guage reading. So it might be wise to replace the sending unit.
