Ok this is my situation in a nut shell.
I live in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. I got a "stock" 98 Hyundai Excel and a limited budget. (Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, spare the insults) What are 3 "priority" engine modifications I can perform to give my "stock" 98 Hyundai Excel the biggest possible performance boost for the cheapest cost? When deciding take into consideration the "most bang for your buck" or "the most performance increase per dollar spent" concept. For a crude estimate on how much my extra horsepower is going to cost me, take the estimated "horse power increase" from the proposed modification and divide it by the estimated "dollars spent for that modification". e.g. on average 1 extra horse power is going to cost me $???? for this modification. Of course there will be other complicating variables introduced into the equation once a modification is performed, e.g. increased running costs, engine strain etc, but disregard that in your calculations at this stage. If you think it is important to highlight the fact though, go for it. Cheers Danno |

Re: 3 engine performance mods for stock 98 Hyundai Excel to get the most bang 4 my buck?
what do you want your car to do?
do you want to drag race, aurtocross, targa, ice race. if you are just looking to make it more fun to drive, i would go with a clutch, flywheel, and limited slip diff, but those arent really hp mods. turbo will probably give you the most hp per dollar, or you could do what every kid does with their car and do an intake, exhaust, and chip (cause they dont know anything else. but none of those are really engine mods either. new cams are one of the best things you can do and will probably give you the most hp per dollar but good luck finding a good one for your car the best thing you could do to a hyundai motor is to throw it away (haha) but kinda seriously. ive heard of people putting 4g63's in tiburons. might be a similar setup.

98 Hyundai Excel to have better take off and perform better over the 1/4 mile
Basically I want it to be quicker off the mark and perform better over the 1/4 mile. Want to turn it into a bit of a sleeper. Picture this, I'm sitting at a red light and some young punks turn up in their Holden SS Commodore and are pissin themselves laughing at me, the light goes green and I blow them away. (Not that I am encouraging breaking road rules or anything)
You were saying get rid of the motor. Got any ideas on what I should replace it with? The car is a GX 3 door hatchback, 5 speed manual and the motor is 4 cylinders, 1500cc, DOHC 16V. Here is a quick speel on what we are talking about. http://www.mynrma.com.au/excel-x3-series-(1994---2000)_hyunexcl3.asp Because the engine has dual overhead cam, for starters, I was thinking of improving the exhaust system. Also I was thinking of getting rid of the current air intake box and replace it with a external filter. Here maybe something of interest to show it is possible and I havent totally lost my marbles. http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/fe...11scc_hyundai/ Any other constructive thoughts would be much appreciated. Re: 3 engine performance mods for stock 98 Hyundai Excel to get the most bang 4 my buck?
mate the only way ur gonna be able to blow away an SS is if you take Garret T66 turbo to the bitch, but before you can think turbo on that enigine, think forged internals, but wateva you do, don't, please don't put a dickhead exhaust tip on. If ya handy mabye extend the intake down to the fog light hole or something, give it some direct air.

you could get some colder rated spark plugs it is a cheap way to gain a couple hp for about $25 (US)

Re: 3 engine performance mods for stock 98 Hyundai Excel to get the most bang 4 my buck?
you are going to have to get really creative to make your car fast. there is very little aftermarket support for that platform. No offense but you clearly have a limited knowledge of cars and to make YOUR car fast it is going to be mostly custom stuff, and that gets expensive when you dont know what you are doing.
if you really want a fast car look into possible engine swaps such as the 4g63 engine (from talon/eclipse/laser and also the lancer evolutions) and just read as much as you can about cars in books and on the internet. a geat place to start is www.howstuffworks.com. just learn everything you can cause for your car it will be almost all custom stuff.
