engine ID search

Hi all,
We bought a used 94 golf for my wife to use to drive back and forth to school and its been a great car. Today I thought I would replace the dist. cap and rotor. Turns out the cap that matches the one I took off the engine is for a older engine. I have spent this afternoon seraching the internet trying to find some sort of engine database but have had zero luck. I would really like to know what year car this engine came out of. Can anyone point me in the right direction.

What is the engine code (stamped on block under the upper radiator hose flange)? Even if the engine was swapped most often the accessories like the distributor are kept from the original engine.

The engine code is ABA064351. I think maybe the distributers where different on this engine and the engine that came with the 1994 golf. It would be nice to be able to give the year of the engine when buying parts in the future. Thanks.

The ABA engine is correct for the vehicle. Perhaps you should just get the cap listed for the vehicle, it's more probable that someone put the wrong cap on it earlier. Note that the basic difference between the earlier caps was they used the old style connector at the wires while the later used the pin type. The cap & wires (& coil) should be matched to each other as to this style.

Thanks, is it possible that my engine has the wrong dist. The newer style dist.cap that is correct for my engine is quite different then the cap I took off the my engine.

Hi, I am currently desperately trying to find the engine identificatin number of my old Golf III (1.6 L engine, 1994 model). It should start with ABU but I cannot find the number anywhere. Since the car is quite old the numbers on the sticker are not visible anymore and I cannot see any numbers cast on the engine block. I would be really grateful if someone could post a picture showing where the numbers should be located on the engine block. If I cannot find the number i will not be able to register my car here in Italy...
