96 Grand Am Gt - Won't shift out of Park
I have a 96 Grand Am Gt and the bugger won't shift out of park today. I can hear the brake release button working and I can press the shift button in all the way but it won't move out of park.
Stumped, L PS Great looking community! |

Re: 96 Grand Am Gt - Won't shift out of Park
It is possible that the brake release button is not fully retracting. There should be a hole close to the shifter that you can insert a screwdriver into to release it manually. Try that. If that does not work it could be that the cable has either seized up or is broken and stuck.

wont come outta park
The beast conked out on be while driving first abs light came on then acted like out of gas it shut off.had dash lights but would not crank just chime.had it towed on flat bed. Could not get it out of park to take off truck.I had to hook up a jump to tow truck battery it then came out of gear.PUt it in neutral it started no daytime running lights dash nothing sounded like one cylinder runiing.
never had a car do this if alt was bad would run off batt till it died. Not this car alt is fine battery was way dead.put in a new battery started right up runs fine. Now I must find the code to have a radio again. Mech says car is all electric if some sensors dont recieve power its says car is not running car will shut off. is the dealer the only way to get radio antitheft codes.I am second owner |

We had the same thing happen to our 99 Intrepid last winter. There may be moisture getting in the shift cable (sorry, I don't know the technical term). Let the car warm up for a bit (may take 15 minutes or more) then try to shift from park - if it works, have your cable checked or replaced. A new cable and missing boot fixed our problem.
