Post Petition For Multifunction Recall

It You Have Had A Random Clicking Noise Coming From Your Dashboard That Sounds Like The Turning Signal Malfunctioning, It May Be Your Multifunction Switch Failing. I Was Informed That The Repair Would Be Upwards Of $400. If This Is A Common Occurance, It Is Possible To Get Gm To Recall Such An Expensive Repair In Order To Quench Customer Thirst For Satisfaction. I Have Friends At Jd Power And Associates Who Will Help Me.

If You Are Having Such Trouble, Please Reply To This Post So That I Can Start Such A Petition.

Thanks

There was already a recall out for the turn signal switch for the 2000- 2001 models, 2002's do not fall under the recall but you could possibly get them to fix it if the car was made in 2001, or if it's still under warrenty. Go to www.NHTSA.dot.gov that's where i saw the recall

Make : PONTIAC Model : GRAND AM Year : 2001
Manufacturer : GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 03V327000 Recall Date : AUG 27, 2003
Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HAZARD FLASHING WARNING LIGHTS:SWITCH
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 670740

Re: Petition For Multifunction Recall

I think everyone should be aware that the recall on the turning signal and the Multi Fucntion Switch ARE TWO SEPERATE items. You can have the turning signal replaced, but the multifunction switch is what is causing the clicking malfunction. I think people should definitely be aware of that.

Re: Petition For Multifunction Recall

Guys Guys.... Orange is right... I don't even think that there is a recall on the multifunction switch. I had the same problem that you guys are talking about.. the hazard switch replacement has nothing to do with the clicking noise. Yesterday I finally had some time to do some troubleshooting on the car and found out that the turnsignal switch (which is a part of the multifunction switch) has a build up of grease inside. Over time, this grease wears and so does the turnsignal contacts. This grease/contact metal powder causes the switch to have a weak short in it. I simply cleaned this stuff off with a rag and a little rubbing alcohol and re-applied a little de-electric grease to the contacts. Worked like a charm, and was very easy to do. No more CLICK CLICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Petition For Multifunction Recall

Curious what is the difference between the turn signal switch and the multi-function switch? I have to ask because I don't see one. Can you actually order from GM a turn signal switch without getting the multi-function switch or vice versa?

Re: Petition For Multifunction Recall

I've been told that the Multi Function is a totally separate component. I don't know how much it would be aftermarket, but a dealer can get it for about $350. The munti function controls pretty much all other switches from what I gether.

Re: Petition For Multifunction Recall

ah your talking about the multi-function/alarm module. A multi-function switch is a turn signal switch with more controls than just turn signals like headlight control, cruise control, etc etc. But yea the module which is just another computer in the car controls a whole load of stuff from door chime to alarm and keyless entry. It's essentially a BCM (Body Control Module).

I never really realized there was two separate things, when mine was replaced it was the multi switch, and it was covered by warranty... but the dealer bunch of idiots told me about the recall and i just figured it was the same part...

Re: Petition For Multifunction Recall

That's the thing that gets me...I have been to different GM dealerships and each time I mention the issue with the clicking, the say that it is related to the recall. One dealership did the same replacement twice. That REALLY perplexes me because wouldn't they have it on record that they already made that repair on my specific car? The only reason I found out that it was the multi-fuction module/Switch was because the first time they replaced the Hazars switch, the clicking got worse (it seemed). So I took it back immediately where they did a Diagnostic that cost me $60. Is there anyone who has an in at PONTIAC or GM that could maybe get this plea heard? Apparently this is not a rare occurance.

This is my problem exactly... I've had the Hazard Flasher recall done and it's clearly not the problem. Multifunction switch needs to be recalled.

The fix for this is easy and free. The problem is caused by contaminated grease which has bridged contacts of the multifunction switch. This cause a short circuit which cause the hazard flasher to cycle. You need a #25 torx and a # 10 torx. Remove the 3 #25 torx screws which hold plastic surrounding the steering column. Remove the plastic. Remove the 25 torx screw on the top of the multi function switch. Detatch the wiring connectors. Remove the multifunction switch. Use the #10 torx to remove all the #10 torx screws. Remove the cover and clean the grease off the contacts and copper switch plate. You will notice grease has bridged the some of the slots in switch plate. Clean it up and regrease. reverse steps to reinstall. Notice the metal peice protruding from the multi function as it facing you. This is the turn signal reset switch. When you turn this is what resets the turn signal when the wheels straighten. This needs to be pushed in so no more than 1/8 " is protruding. If you dont do this before reinstalling your horn may go off when ever you move the steering wheel after reinstallation. This whole job should take 20- 45 minutes based on your mechanical apptitude.

Re: Petition For Multifunction Recall

Mine is a 2003 Grand Am SE1 and I am having this problem right now. There is a bulletin out in Canada on this, but no recall to this date.
