99 grand am - does belt exist?

Was told today that my a/c compressor needs to be replaced...may quit soon and since it's all on one belt, I could get stranded somewhere. Price given was $800...and that's too much for right now. Is there a belt I can get that will bypass the a/c so that I can drive it until I can afford to get a new compressor? Thank you for any help!

Re: 99 grand am - does belt exist?

This particular vehicle uses what is called a surpenine belt, which is one single belt that runs all accessories, including power steering, ac compressor, alternator, water pump, emissions, etc. Now, in your situation, what you could do is gather all info on your car, including make, model, and year, and go to a parts supplier and order a new belt for your car. Now, here is what you will need to keep in mind: If it is at all possible, order a NON A/C BELT!! A non a/c belt is designed for the same make and model of your car, only without an a/c. This belt will be smaller, because it is designed for the same type of car as yours, only without the a/c installed. So, you can install this belt on your car, and it will be a nice, snug fit, and will bypass the a/c. Problem will be temporarily solved, for a much more reasonable price. Good luck!! Be sure to post again, and let me know if this is at all an option. Depending on the year of your vehicle, this is definetely a good alternative.

Was A/C even an option in '99, I thought it came standard on the GA platform?
